I usually start by working out what the application needs to do. I create a list of functions it performs. If there is a technology that I need to use that I don't know much about then I read articles about it, look at samples and build small test riggs to demonstrate to myself how it works.

You can use your favourite search engine to look for "SQL Server" and "user", "group", "role", "login", etc.

Once you have some idea of what you can do and you have a specific query (rather than this vague query) then forums become a great place to get the answers to your questions. At the moment any answer can only be as vague as the question.
