1. I feel they serve as a warning to others.
2. You can't reply to them after they are spam.

The reason they are left there is to illustrate to spammers and abusers what will happen when they post material that is unwanted on the site.

I totally agree with what you say. But I am not bragging, the board looks terrible with plenty of [Message Removed] entries, a few of them with replies too which makes it even uglier. My suggestion is to eliminate the spammers and their *belongings* completely, mercilessly, then and there.
*Begin Edit* One can easily realise the amount of work that should have been done to create a community like this. But now Idiots have a chance to make it look dirty, if not they do have a chance to troll.*End Edit*

I think the board looks even more terrible with the crap that's left IN the forum that should otherwise be [Message Deleted].

Sounds like what King Edward of England did to Wallace's body to warn people who were plotting against his authority. He quartered it and placed bits of it all over his kingdom. It had the opposite effect.

Spammers might get happy just to make the forum look ugly by posting many spams. If the message is deleted and gone, they would be feel helpless and would not try again after seeing the message disappear completely.

In Firefox: Hit reply on any message, enter some text, try to close the tab, and you'll get that error message.

Actually yes, it did.

Is the "Cancel" button a new addition to the message editor page or have I been eating too many ham sandwiches? If it's the former, would you consider right justifying, moving it further away from the "Preview" button, or adding a confirmation dialog when the message content is non-empty?
I'm tired of cancelling my intricately formatted posts when I meant to preview them. 
Also, the "Cancel" button doesn't add any client-side functionality not already possible by pressing the browser's "Back" button.

Enter some text in the message window. Now hit the back button. Now hit the cancel button.
Besides, this is a protest to Microsoft and their Vista UI change that moves the back buttons of wizards up to the top left of screens, away from the bottom line of buttons as it used to be.
