MFC is kind of dead compared to a few years ago ( not that it's absolutely dead, of course ). This is probably the best site to ask MFC questions. As far as books go, I'd think you'd find a lot of used books on ebay cheap, for the same reason.
Depending on your background ( do you already know C++ ? ), you may find that downloading MFC articles from this site and experimenting with them is a good place to start. If you don't know C++, learn C++ first, then learn MFC on top of that. What books are good for C++ depends again on your background. If this is your first language, I'd start slow with something like 'teach yourself C++ in 24 hours'. If you have a background in other languages, you may be able to jump right into 'The C++ programming language' by Bjarne Stroustrup.

There are a lot of good book about VC++/MFC programming, for instance, have a look at
Jeff Prosise's one [^].

Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the best book I've read on MFC. It approached it by explaining HOW MFC works, not simply how to code to it. I found it very helpful to use the debugger to step into MFC classes and have been through about 90% of the MFC source.
Above all, experiment!

As for your question if you already know how to program using Win32 APIs then MFC will be a snap for you to pick up as most of the classes are wrappers around the primitive types.
If you don't know any Win32 programming then I suggest you understand the basic plumbing, and a good book for that is the Charles Petzold book ..Also whatever you do don't pick up one of those god awful big red wrox book, simply trash! I have an old MFC book by Jeff prosise on windows 95!!! Ha, if you can get your hand on a copy or a later release then it's definitely worth the read, excellent coverage of what you need to know about MFC from start to finish. Trust me when I say not much as changed since then...thanks to MS for leaving us C++ developers out in the cold while the C# .Net folks get all the cool libraries and we're still in the stone ages of having to write routines from scratch!!! Ahhh I want to cry man..... See what you gone done now sonny, I am all bent out of shape trying to answer your question!!! Are you HAPPY now, Hugh, Mr. Vishwanath Patil .... ok me joke!

Hi,
Is there any standard for return values from a function, for example if my function returns only two value(true/false) then i would like to assign bool as its return value, but if i have got three values(0,1,2), then what data type should be the used as return value.

you have plenty of types. if the function may return little integers, char is good enough. but short, int, long are possible choices.

If the function may return only a small set of integers (such as {0,1,2}) then the enum type is a good choiche. Usually you can assign to each member of the set a meanigful name:
enum TrustLevel
{
LOW = 0,
AVERAGE,
HIGH
};

i'm new in programming c++. i only learn to use win32 console application..
i want to load, view an image(any jpg,bmp,gif) to my program. the picture will be view after i click some number and the picture will be assign to that number only..
i try to use 'swicth', but then i only manage to click number but don't know how to assign picture to that number..

Are you using MFC, or just the Win32 API? Is this a console or GUI appliocation?

You can develop a console application using Win32, MFC, or both. You can also develop a GUI application using Win32, MFC, or both.

Hi All,
I use dc.GetPixel() dc.SetPixel() functions to render bitmaps with my color and then StretchBlt on to my Paint dc.I do StretchBlt of around 16 bitmaps on Paint DC.As a result my painting is delayed by 3 secs.
So, Is there any otherway other than GetPixel() and SetPixel() to reduce the delay?
