I've not used it (I haven't had the need to [yet]) but SpinRite[^] is very popular. If it doesn't recover the data, there are companies that specialize in just this sort of recovery.

I am develop a driver for windows XP/2000,and it seems has a prob now. call IoDeleteSymbolLink lead to a BSOD when I want to update my dirver. But ,if I uninstall the old one first & then install the new version,all things do its work.No error,& no BSOD. I am save the symbol link string in my device extension. I don't know what is happened.Can any one tell my why? Thanks very much.

I made a small program (in Delphi) to reprint spool files from the windows XP printer spooler. I used the Windows API (units WinSpool and Printers), more specifically the AddJob, GetJob, SetJob, ScheduleJob and EnumJob API calls to get things done. Using the _JOB_INFO_1A record structure.
My problem is that one printer is accepting the reprinted file (a Samsung ML 1610) and a number of other printers do not print the file. I can see the file get into the print queue where it looks like to be printed, but only an initial reset of the printer is done, nothing is printed. What I noticed is that in the queue the number of paged was "n/a", so i tried to set it via SetJob where I also altered the document name. The strange thing is that the document name is passed to the name of the queue entry, but the total number of pages is not. Also when after the SetJob and ScheduleJob calls the jobdata is retreived with the EnumJobs call, the total number of pages is reset to 0 (I had set it to 1) and the number of pages printed (was 1) and I set it to 0 succeeded.
I am open to any idea that can explain this, so please help me out.

Installed the new motherboard and set about connecting all the cables from the case. I have never before had a motherboard or a case that had a firewire connection on it. So I read the manual and have come away from it more confused than before.
The manual is talking about 1394a and provides the following table.
TPA+ 1 2 TPA-
GND 3 4 GND
TPB+ 5 6 TPB-
12V 7 8 12V
Empty 9 0 GND
It also states that if you connect things up wrong you will do great damage. Don't want to do that so immediately thought I should ask strangers on the Internet again.
The cabling from the case has the TPA + and - and the TPB + and -, no GND and also has a VP and VG. I can obviously connect up the first four, but where do the VP and VG go and what problems will I have if I don't have any GND connected?

you do have a GND, even though it's no identified so.
I hope some will confirm, but i think VP is "voltage positive" (+12V), and VG is the Ground (GND)...
ps: if it's not, i don't replace motherboards

It seems to me that VP = Voltage Positive and VG = Voltage Ground

I agree with the above VP = 12v and VG = ground.
Pins 3,4 and 0 will (or should) be connected to each other on the board as should 7 and 8 so connect VG to 3, 4 or 0 and VP to 7 or 8. You could verify if you have a multimeter (make sure there's no power to the board and set to measure resistance)?

Hi friends, I found that if using SCM to load a driver dynamically there would be a system event log as follows:
The XXX.sys service was successfully sent a start control.
How can I load the driver without this event log?

I find another program which uses driver as well but I never see the event log for the driver when it is loaded. I just feel strange about it and I just want how to hide the event log.

Hi, I have a problem with my memory upgrade on my computer. I have lost the manual of my motherboard, so I could not know what is the maximum size of the memory that I need to upgrade in my computer.
From here I would like to know are there any tool that I could use to scan my computer hardware and it could let me know the maximum memory that my mainboard is support and the maximum memory that my mainboard support for each slot?

I'm a little confused,
Is a (i.e processor) cache just another name for the stack? Or are they different?
A wiki definition search of cache seemed to match my understanding of the stack (i.e temporarily stores data that is likely to be used again).

Hi Mark,
cache and stack are completely different things.
A stack is a data structure intended to keep historic information, things get pushed on it, later on
popped from it, in reverse order.
Microprocessors typically contain the required logic in hardware to have an execution stack,
where each call of a subroutine/function/method (CALL, JSR, or whatever the assembly instruction is called)
automatically pushes the "program counter" (and possibly a bit more) onto the stack, and when
returning from the subroutine (RETURN, RTS, ... instruction) automatically pops the same information
from stack and restores it in the appropriate registers, so normal program flow can continue
where it left of before.
A cache is a data structure intended to keep a copy of existing information at hand, typically
to boost performance. Caches operate on a statistical basis; if they contain what is needed,
then all is good; if not, data is loaded from elsewhere, probably main memory.
Modern processors have an on-chip "level 1" cache (typically two, one for
data, one for code), and a "level 2" cache and sometimes the control logic for a "level 3" cache.
Each level has different sizes and speeds, level 1 being the smallest but fastest.
A typical example would be a CPU running at say 1 GHz, requiring 1 cycle to access one of its
registers, 2 cycles to read from its level 1 cache, 4 cycles to read from its level 2 cache,
and hundreds of cycles to read from main memory (main memory works at microsecond speeds, not
nanoseconds).
Conclusion: a stack is a logical entity, it holds specific information that is necessary for
correct execution; a cache holds a copy, and is used to speed up things.
BTW: extra stacks can be implemented by software (e.g. each thread in a system needs its own
stack); extra caches can also be implemented by software (e.g. results of a long computation may
be stored in a cache, so if they happen to be required again later on they might be found there).

I started as an electronics engineer, so I do know the internals of a processor.
In fact I designed some myself, very simple ones; on paper, not for real.
This hardware knowledge helps me a lot in understanding how a system is operating,
or failing for that matter.
While I read a lot about software, it is hard if not impossible to keep up.
I am aware there is much more to know than is humanly possible
(IMO Leonardo Da Vinci was the last human to know all technical stuff humanity knew at the time)
So I am struggling with the latest stuff, say LINQ, XAML, Lambda, and what have you.
However, I have an inquisitive mind; I don't like the feeling of hearing
about something without really knowing what it is. Hence, I am reading a lot, and
rather busy on the Internet...

Hi,
I'm trying to find out if this is possible, and if so how to do it. From a machine running XP or Vista, as I understand it, when you send something to print, Windows/the print drivers render the file into a format the printer can read and understand (a spool file?). This file is sent to the printer then the local copy is deleted. I believe this file is held briefly in the 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS' folder, which is effectively the shared print queue folder. for all printers on that machine.
My question is whether you can capture this 'raw' spooler data (I've managed to copy and paste to capture the files that appear in the spool folder, but you have to be fast!), and crucially, once you've captured it, can you then somehow send it to print again?
I have a feeling this is more complicated than I think. Presumably there are different formats of spooler data etc? Is there a utility that can do the printing/viewing of captured files?
