Hi Guys,
I wrote an Application which is selfupdating. When it starts it opens a ftp connection, downloads a small xml-file if possible, and compares the versiondata. if a new version was found, it displays the appropiate message and give the user the oportunity to start updating the application.
it then opens a ftp connection again, and downloads the file previous identified as "update".
this worked nicely, but I did a major code review, which means many classes and methods got changed. when i try to update from a old version to the new version, it downloads everything ok, but when restarting the application, it raises an exception
-couldnt find some gone delegate of a library.
and then it blows up with a "missingmethod"-exception from another library.
can somebody please help me on this. I havent got a clue how to get around this issue.
All the files got updated ok, so i dont know why it still wants to access some of the old crap.
Any ideas highly appreciated!!!!

I'm not sure if this helps or not, but this might be an idea for the future of your application.
ClickOnce can handle update for applications automatically, and .NET has a nice system for supporting automatic updates.
You could deploy using ClickOnce, and then check the System.Deployment.Application.ApplicationDeployment.CurrentDeployment static property, and call the ".CheckForUpdate()" method on it. If it returns true, there's a new version, if false, then there's not. There are also methods to start the update within the application. Namely "Update" and "UpdateASync".

I tried it with click-once once, but as it is with most microsoft-stuff... it has some sh*t in it nobody needs, or its not developed for the real world, for real problems...
Click Once uses a ugly Windows to ask for confirmation-- and this is too much asked for normal(grandpa)-users. If you want to get rid of this sh*t you have to buy a certificate and this is bloody expensive. thats why we decided to do this ourselves. it usually works nicely and reliable.. but this last upgrade gave me exceptions I didnt know what to do.
But I apparently just forgot to include one new file in my update xml. thats why I got this MissingMethod Exception.

If you want your app to run on multiple platforms you really need to think about it much earlier in the project.
SQL server does not run on Macs. If SQL is a requirement, you could consider running the server on a seperate windows PC, and the app on a mac. Or you could consider switching to one of the many other database products available that will run on a mac. This will most likely require some changes to your app though to work with the different database, although if you've only used fairly simple standard stuff, with any luck you won't have too much to change.
DBMS packages - operating system support[^]
(Popular ones are Oracle, MySQL and PostgreSQL)
Going right back, although mono does run .net apps, it certainly does not off complete support. There are large portions of the framework missing, so you may find that some features of .net that you have used don't work on mono. Again, if you want your app to be multi platform you need to design it that way from the beginning.

Well, if you're using a local SQL Server database, you'd be forced to run Windows in a virtual PC on the Mac. Install Windows and your application on the virtual machine and you should be all set to go.
You can try to use Mono, but AFAIK, it lacks SQL Server data provider support. Also, Mono is NOT a 100% replacement or implementation for Microsoft's .NET Framework, so there will be compatibility problems.
Mono is not an implementation of Microsoft's .NET Framework. The .NET Framework is Microsoft's implementation of the ECMA-335 Common Language Infrastructure specification. Granted, Microsoft created the spec, so they have a decided advantage to it's implementation. Both Mono and Portable.NET are independant projects that implement the same specification, but all are free to add their respoective libraries to it to support specific platforms. Microsoft added thousands of namespaces and classes to support almost all flavors of Windows, while Mono supports Unix/Linux and Portable.NET is trying to bridge the gap between Windows and Linux.
And no, each implementation is not a 100% compatible replacment for another. You can not compile an app under the .NET Framework and expect it to run 100% under Mono or Portable.NET. Nor can you compile it under Mono or Portable.NET and expect it to work 100% under .NET.

You cannot run SQL Server on a Mac. You'll need to have a Windows machine to run it, and you can connect your Mac to it over the network.
