Clients really are the most important people in a certain sense. But they usually don't have any influence on the internal workings of a company - and they shouldn't.
So I think you are confusing the decision making process of a company with its culture (which has to be indeed client-centric)...

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning. Programmer - an organism that turns coffee into software.

Here we have a mix... the CEO and customers
Either when the customers demand or the CEO wants it done... it happens! ![Smile | :)](https://codeproject.global.ssl.fastly.net/script/Forums/Images/smiley_smile.gif)

Yes, but doesn't "in your company" mean those who are employed by or are part of the company? If you include clients, then you'll also have to include other external factors like the government, [edit] shareholders, as posted above [/edit], etc...

absolutly.
- There are times/cases I call the shots
- There are times/cases my boss (the owner) calls the shots
- There are times the customers call the shots
At times all of the above.

Oh didn't you notice, analogous to square roots, they recently introduced rectangular, circular, and diamond roots to determine the size of the corresponding shapes when given the area. Luc Pattyn[^]

Clients are the reason many business exist, but the question is about who in the company has the most influence (regardless of the external influences on they themselves)

I absolutely agree with you that software should be made for the client - this should go without saying, but unfortunately this is all too often not the case (If the software doesn't work, then simply the customer is not smart enough. ).
But usually they are not involved in the operations of the company, they are driving it. They may complain, they may ask for some additional features, they say what they need and/or want, but they are not making business or - even worse - technical decisions.
Thank god...
