I have been designing and programming embedded systems for a long time.

Note: I do NOT work for Microsoft.

Most embedded systems use microprocessors that support C and/or C++ with compilers and linkers and drivers specific to their hardware.

Microsoft provides a Robot Starter Kit that might give you a good place to start reading.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/robotics/default.aspx[^]

Another good place to start is to purchase (beg borrow or steal L0L) a microprocessor evaluation board.

There are so many out there that you will have to read through the literature and see what best fits your needs. I just googled Arm9 Development Kit and got this variety of hits on ebay

http://shop.ebay.com/items/development+kits?_dmd=1&_sop=12&rvr_id=&cbp=8.0&rawquery=arm9+development+kits&sig=ae16e1d9a5275036c9d7381e105a97a77edf659c07d6a67b710fd71a454b83d7d178b9e2315da9f051190406362bb416d69dd46cad1f7eda5a998a69d35207b88f13f8f1a9e37a733110c0a889e8637ca436b11bb85eae68539c3865fb6612a85de5db1edb380474dba863b36ac1b83055580903a1fac64918a53fbc581de209%7C1&mscbg=1&crlp=356574376_1&MT_ID=7&tt_encode=utf8&seg_id=0&msclkid=f284fc2aabf9fd41b3509102c314ce68&its=20090910153530&keyword=development+kits[^]

Googling up another for Windows CE

http://www.arcom.com/products/icp/dev_kits/WindowsCE_NET/VIPER.htm[^]

I realize some of this is old...

If you need more information... or suggestions let me know.
