I was in at least one of those earlier discussions.

It still is my feeling the user comfort could be improved in two mutually exclusive ways:

1.
have the defaults be settable only on the settings page
AND add the message "changing these settings will apply to this message only" on the edit message page

2.
leave the logic as is
AND add one of the messages "changing these settings will also change the default for future messages, as you are creating a new message now" or "changing these settings will apply to this message only, as you are editing an existing message" on the edit message page
