Hey, don't blame me. I'm not the one posting the objectional posts in the lounge. I'm neither for nor against it...

I'm just saying that you have a choice.

Pesonally, I think the whole issue is blown out of proportion and that people should have more important stuff to worry about than a few bad jokes.

One more thing: This has essentially nothing to do with the lounge, so just saying that the stuff should be posted in another forum (and then it would be okay) as Chris says Here[^] is not a solution to the original problem.

The best solution would be - as someone has already pointed out in another post - to have a dedicated joke forum. That way everybody entering that would know right off that stuff posted there is meant to be a joke and should not be taken seriously.

As it is now, I think people are confused as to the purpose of the lounge, the back room and the soapbox and what content goes where...

Both KSF and WS are entirely subjective: just because you don't like something doesn't mean you should be able to force your view on someone else. If you don't like what you see then report it. But if you're the only one, then it stays. If your attitude is that these posts are directly affecting you then leave though quite how that works is beyond me. You seriously think that a potential employer will hold you responsible for something that soemone else, entirely beyond your control, said or does? It's like saying you'll get fired for reading the wrong newspaper or for getting caught reading the wrong article. If you can't deal with that then perhaps you should leave. Good luck finding another forum as good as this or as well behaved as this one.

If you found an article in a newspaper that you dont like you dont read it. There are many threads here I dont like so I dont read them, if they are inapproiate then I cast the remove option and hope others do the same!

One of the biggest problems here is the translation / interpetation of humour from different countries

Unfortuntely some work places really are this draconian.

And let's not forget: we're not talking about workplaces in the US or UK. This is a global site, and while there's no way I'm even attempting to satisfy the lowest common denominator, we all need to show a modicum of common sense with regards to the community as a whole.

I can't agree with that: even if a newspaper is known for offensive views it would be my business if I read it, nobody elses and I would be mightily pissed of if someone else told me what I could or couldn't read.

First, I agree that some of those posts were entirely inappropriate. However, as others have said I have put in place the mechanism to allow the community to self-police via the 'Vote to remove message' link. Having me (or a set of moderators) spend their time reading each post and subjectively deciding what's in and what's out will simply lead to complaints of elitism as well as deliberate attempts to sneak one in. It's a mugs game.

The vote-to-remove system itself is very, very tricky to balance because on one hand it can be fairly easily hijacked by those who have no life, and on the other it can be too hard to trigger (your experience) when it's needed most. It is weighted by member level, though, so if even 2 or 3 high level members hit it, the message is removed.

Back to those particular posts: if you truly see something horrible then never hesitate to contact me directly. It's a long weekend (very long!) here in Canada so I've been taking it easy after a bit of a marathon so haven't been as responsive as usual.

As to the Lounge itself it is, and will always be, kid safe. The Soap Box is there for those who want to pretend to be grown up and swap the questionable jokes.

Yep, and that's really my concern here. There are many CP members who publish great articles, and they are the reason I joind and stayed with CP. On the other hand, there is a relatively small group that pretty much only participates in the Lounge and fills it with immature discussions that are unfortunatelly too visible and can give the wrong impression to the outsiders about the purpose and spirit of CodeProject.

I think this, more than anything, is what I take offense to. What outsiders? Who are these people, exactly? Why would I care what they think? Why would anyone care what someone else thinks? I really object to being told what I can and can't do or read or say. I haven't seen any jokes there that I would be offended by and, if I did, I would either vote 1 and say something or ignore it. You need to get off your high horse.
