We thought (and debated) long and hard about it. SOPA can certainly affect us because we accept user-generated content and the bill, if enacted in its current form, would allow malicious and frivolous litigation against us. Or it could shut us down.
The US does not have the legal right to police the internet nor is there sufficient moral ground to have the legislation written in its current format. To me it's a clear case of pandering to the increasingly out of date business models perpetuated by the special interest groups who continually try to control a market instead of adapting, and serving, a market.
We've already seen a few clearer heads speak out in Washington, and so we decided to keep our cool until the direction being taken is clear.

OK.
I had similar experiences at work, or even in private, where a maybe-soon-to-come law/event/.. could influence my workplace or private life in a very bad way. But even based on that, I cannot say if a massive reaction right away against an still-to-evolve idea is better than a massive protest once the facts are really set, so I understand the difficulty in taking a position about it. I can cite cases where the "right-away" protest nip the law in the bud, others where it only lead to killing an awkwardly communicated but good idea.
Another question: CP may or may not be directly affected; if not, would you show solidarity to the sites which we are all visiting every day, and which would be affected ?

The desire to nip it in the bud is very, very strong. Believe me.
CodeProject will be as affected as any other website. If the bill is cleaned up to the point we're we're only affected by our own stupidity then my feeling is that others would be in the same situation, and I most certainly can't support websites that promote copyright violations.
However, if we somehow dodged the bullet but the affects on the internet as a whole were unacceptable, then yes, we would stand by our brothers.

Some people only come here for the code samples. No biggie. This person has been here for over a year now.

This person seems to have been active with Organizer points for approx. 90+ days. Downloading articles (unlimited point potential) plus the others could potentially bring this person in line with what they have in points, in a legit way.

Look at the points values in the FAQ[^], I think it's most unlikely they could have done this in a month.

I know. That is why I don't think the graph is really that helpful.
I did the numbers and it is possible with the 90+ day scenario.
Like I said in my reply, Chris will most likely come back with no problems found.

Reason I point it out is because that's a huge jump in a short period of time... doesn't seem legitimate use. They could be copying source to post on another site. This probably also takes up bandwidth unnecessarily, I can't imagine why a single user would need to download that many projects in that time frame (other than to copy the site).

However, questions like yours have come up in the past and have "almost" always been dismissed as legit...I have always questioned this, myself, secretly...so the hamsters can't hear.
