Yeah, that's a very plausible cause - your cookie/vpn settings affecting 100s of other CPians. My guess was that they pasted their question and the paste dialog popped up and thought it was code, so they looked at the preview in the paste dialog and went "sure! I love a tan background". But the latest one I saw was just <pre>, with no "lang" attribute, so it would have to have been manually selected either in the Paste dialog, or by manually wrapping in PRE tags.
