For me, the discrepancy is between the number of people who ask my advice and the number that actually take it.

If anybody in friends group / relatives, is planning to buy tech product, we inform each other. Find as much information about it and then decide to go for it or not.

They do whatever they wish with or without my wisdom and or blessing.
I'm the last of 5 so have had no creditability within the family.
So they load Norton 360, Macafee Internet "Security" all at once as well as whatever the google hits say to run then defrag to try n' speed it up. - Boy do they like to bandy about "defrag" in social circles.
Then they scrap it all for a Mac cause Macs don't have problems...... 
Do I seem bitter?

Most people ask when something have crashed and not working.They expect we can fix hardware problem also and can even repair calculator

yea... totally agree with you... But I had love for both, hardware and software. Thankfully I can fix my PC on my own (as I have built it) and also fix some hardware problems  Its an added advantage because if something goes wrong in my PC, I dont have to panic and run after a hardware guy to get that fixed. Its just like instant solution

My wife always asks my advice before buying a tech item...
Then she goes and buys what I told her not to buy where I told her not to buy it.
Then she ploughs on to use it in contravention of logic and the instructions and when she has no success asks me to train her in its proper use (which training she proceeds to ignore).
Then she expects me to support, maintain and fix it for ever.
(I love her really.)

Recently my sister decided to buy a new laptop. So she went to one of those big electronic stores and asked the sales guy "Which computer should I buy?", and the guy said "Doesn't matter". She was pissed with this poor advise and left.
In the evening she called me and asked me "Which computer should I buy?", and i said "Doesn't matter", She: "That's what the sales guy said", Me: "That's because he is right". So she went back and bought one with a nice color. Now she is happy.

You and the sales guy both answered better than me. If someone ask me I look the person and then I said buy a pink one or buy a blue one.

I fall in the 7-10 range, mostly family members, some friends. It's usually about buying computers, which has a conversation that goes like this:
Them: "What computer should I buy?"
Me: "I don't keep up on prices."
Them: "Who is better, Dell or Gateway?"
Me: "Gateway is still in business?"
Them: "I... think so."
Me: "The last two computers I bought were Macs."
Them: "They're too expensive."
Me: "Well it depends..."
Them: "So, Dell or Gateway?"
Me: "I really don't think it matters."
Them: (Finally getting irritated.) "But what would you buy?"
Me: "The last time I bought a desktop PC I didn't build myself, back in 1996, I bought a Gateway 2000. I hope they still come in cow boxes ..."
Them: "Thanks so much! I'll go buy that."
Me: "I did buy a Dell laptop in 2003, which was a piece of crap."
Them: "Ok, I think..."
Me: "Then I bought an HP laptop a couple years ago. That convinced me to switch to Macs."
Them: "Oh... so you think I should get a Mac?"
Me: "No, they're too expensive."

It should start out with your first answer being, Ok you buy the beer, then string them along with the rest of the conversation as long as he keeps buying!

I get asked about all things electrical, from cell phones, laptops, PCs, televisions, DVD players to wash machines and microwaves.
They usually start with “You know about electronics don’t you?”
Most of the time they’ve already made their product choice and are hoping that I will confirm their choice as a good one. The one thing I generally advise is to check the reviews online by doing a search on a product.
I usually tell them as long as it isn’t one of those “As seen on TV!” products that the product should work just fine.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

If the conversation starts with "So your in the computer business are you?"
Then I usually know someone is going to ask me a question not relating to my pc's in anyway.
Like the one guy asked me to fix his video machine and when I told him I have no idea how to fix it, he said but I just told him I'm in the computer business.
Another case, fiend's dad asked me to fix his GPS...

No, I'm not interested in comparing products, since they're already comparable. Go choose your color, the rest is non-sense.
Yes, *ANY* modern computer will have a fast browser. And yes, a fast word-processor. No, I don't care about your phone-religion - if you can make a call with your phone, the device works as intended.
