...and if the reason you want line numbers is to find errors, you can use the F4 key (F8 key in VS.NET) to go to a file and line in the output window.

Not sure exactly what it is called. But in MSVC 6.0 when you are working with classes and what not the . and -> bring up your little handly window with all class variables and functions and what not... However I noticed that sometimes they stop showing up. I appreciate this little window because it lets me know that name I am typing is correct. Sometimes I might declare a class or what not, and forget exactly how I declared it.. was it MaxVolume or VolumeMax .. so this window is great because it shows it right there.. anyways sometimes it disappears after a while.. usualy after typing a lot (I get to typing fast, and sometimes I hit crazy windows combo keys like the ALT-S Win95 key on the keyboard on accedient).. so once it leaves I have to close out of the IDE and completly log off and log back on to get my popup window back.. is there any easier way?

probably not. the best way to fix the Intellisense problems is to delete the project's .NCB file, but the IDE locks that file while the project is up.

Thanks for the replies.. I was hoping there was a key combination I was hitting on accedient. Kinda like when ya get to typing and you try to type CFileDialog and instead get C and a Find window  I know that is a key combo.. but I never can remember it.. so I have to log off/on to fix that one too!
Remember: Some people call them "features" I call them "Annoying". Does anybody actually use windows hot keys?

I'm trying to add context sensitive help to a menu in a dialog app, and have not been very successful. For grins, I went back to basics, and with appwizard, created a dialog based app with "context sensitve help" checked. I added a single drop down menu containing one entry with an an ID of ID_TEST_HELP. Then I edited the .rtf help file, and added a page for this menu item and set the # footnote to ID_TEST_HELP. When I compile the project, I see that the .hm file contains a reference to the ID_TEST_HELP ID, so I'm thinking everything's fine. When I select the menu item, and press F1 it takes me to the main help screen, not the page with the ID of menu item. So my question is, what do you have to do to get context sensitive help working in a dialog based application? I've tried most of the suggestions I've found on the web, and in this site, but nothing hits the mark.
I must be missing something fundamental!

Unfortunately the default AppWizard generated project doesn't contain the code for context (shift-F1) help, although it does handle topic (F1) help. To support context help you'll also have to modify your dialogs to pass on the correct help ID.
The MS Help95 sample shows you how to do this for WinHelp (supporting HtmlHelp is a different can of worms, unfortunately). Have a look at MSDN Knowledge Base Article Q167698 for details.

I'm not using HTMLHelp, so I'll take a look at MS Help95 (if I can find it).

OK, I have context sensitive help working in my dialog app now, but there is a catch. It only works if I click on a control, and press the F1 key. For some reason, the Help Cursor at the top right of the main dialog (this is a dialog app), doesn't do anything when I click on it!
Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Maybe.
If a function is in the same file, the compiler may be able to inline it.
If the code is small enough and close enough, you might get lucky and both the caller and callee will be in the same cache line.

Hello there,
In Windows Sockets, is it possible to do have a server socket listen on, say port 2000, and then when a remote machine connects to it, have the resulting connection be established on another port? ...and then have that server socket continue listening on port 2000 for any other connections (they may be from the same remote machine) ?

AFAIK, no, then it's not possible.
Why do you wanna do this anyway, you can have thousands connections to the same port on a server...

Yes, but what if you needed more than one socket connection from the same machine with that same server? You would need another socket on the server to listen on a different port so that you could connect the second socket?

It already works that way. You create a socket that "listens" on port 2000 and when somebody "connects" to that port, you "accept" the connection (creating another socket) and the "listen" socket continues "listening" for more "connects". There are several socket interfaces, but they all basically work this way.

I suspect by string you mean a char *, in which case the answer is strcat. Better to use std::string like this
string s = "fish";
s = "eat more " + s;
s = s + " to be more fit";
s now equals "eat more fisn to be more fit'.
