I've never spent more than 10 hours in a week in meetings (and that is a lot, it's typically around 5.) My guess is that many programmers are in the same boat here. Management types tend to spend a lot more time in meetings, though, it seems. You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose. I can't imagine writing code without reading a good technical article first. But now, it's more research/design (but just barely) than coding. I guess as you get older and more experienced, people actually start respecting you a little more instead of thinking of you as a "code monkey".
