What the Hell is wrong with these people I keep reading about in the paper who want to go and live on Mars? I've been to the top of Tenerife which is probably similar and there's nothing there - just rocks and thin air. It was rubbish!

It seems so distant and yet so close. 17 light hours away, that's a long way away but at the same time rather pitiful on universal scale.

I've got a DVD by Stephen Hawking, and I will admit to only half paying attention watching it but if I recall correctly he reckons you can get to the other side of the universe in 80 years, if you're going really bloody fast, nearly light fast. But it'd be a whole lot longer on earth.

It doesn't seem that far - it would only take a jet 2395 years[^] to travel the same distance.

And it will only take Voyager 40,000 years to reach the nearest star.
