2010: Microsoft introduces windows phone with flat design and bold colours
reviewers: blocky, childish, tasteless, etc...
2013: Apple introduces iOS 7 with flat design and bold colours
reviewers: stylish, fresh, best thing since the invention of toast, etc...
Sigh.

Unfortunately, a majority of tech reporters are Apple Fanboys. So this is not surprising.

This has been happening for over 30 years to my knowledge. The typical tack is Microsoft = Big Corporate nastiness, controlling and fascist*. Apple = fun, funky liberal choice. The irony being it was always hard to use non-Apple hardware or software on your Mac. Even now things are severely vetted. This persists, even though Apple is now bigger than MS, largely because Apple's graphics/DTP has always been ahead of the Windows-based world, so all the "creative" types and journalists use them. More worrying is the fact that students in the US seem to be given a Mac computer (not sure, but I think I read this), this will lock many of them into the ecosystem as they'll find it too hard to get out of, and a new generation of propagandists will be born. Rarely have I heard a Microsoft user be so cultish about their IT choice. I've known a few Mac people like like this, they go all wide-eyed like they've joined a religion when they talk about Macs, and when you point out, for example, Apple restricts the types of software you can install from the store on your own hardware, they actually try and warp-logic their way into "it is for our own good". If I want an app that simulates a pair of jiggling women's boobies, then I want an app that does that, it's not in my interest to be told I can't for my own good.

What's the name of that app?

Saw another news report at the weekend about a school (in Wales) where every child has an iPad.

I thought the aspirations of every school in Wales was to have the kids sheered before the start of term.

Just had a tour of a local Primary school that we're looking at sending my boy to and each class had a crate of iPads.
That's somewhere in the region of £15K per class (or £375k for the whole school), surely there are cheaper alternatives than that?

I don't know whether you are old/alive enough to remember what things were like back then, but could you imagine how quickly MS would have been criticised (or even sued) for anti-competitive practices in the 90s if they supplied machines to schools like that. Hell, they couldn't even supply you with their own browser by default, in a way that looks open-source when compared to Apple's App Store.

Oh I'm more that old enough to remember how MS would have been crucified if they employed such practices. But hell this is the age of Apple and because they are perceived to be cool they can do no wrong.
But Steve Jobs is dead and the company is on the slide, I remember how apple was in the mid-nineties without Jobs at the helm....

Well MS don't make machines so it would have been a bit strange.,
And in Aus at least MS partners very closely with schools and universities, providing cheap licenses and free software and other help.

Trust me... the flat look is temporary. We'll eventually return to gradients, rounded corners and drop shadows. You heard it here first.

Yes that has become like status symbol !! Like people mostly blurt things in parties "I am working out" or "I am on diet !" If you want to be called yourself a techie, geek etc. you must must bash MS for every silly thing you can find.
I replied to couple of OP lately. And as I said, its mostly developer/user's ignorance rather than issue.
Thanks,

iOS7 is Metro with Aero. I love the concept but the execution has missed the mark by *this* much. Actually by that much.
iTunes has been overly complicated, the Calendar overly "simplified" so that it's hard to actually see your schedule. Way, way too much bright, white space which means staring at your alarm at 5:30AM trying to turn it off is like having needles drilled into you. Soften it a little, guys? And the catch-me-if-you-can controls on Safari means lots of accidental clicking on ads while trying just to get the hell off a website.

Far as I know it is difficult if not impossible to be a "reviewer" without having a bias.
Certainly that is something that I have seen numerous times about movie reviewers.
Certainly if someone is reviewing colors then is nothing but a subjective determination.
And it certainly seems to me that a significant number of people are more interested in the emotional aspects of their phone versus the technical side. After all why is there a market for different color cases and things to stick on the phone. Given that a subjective review is to be expected.

...you may spy a smartly dressed Hungarian lady having hysterics.
Mrs Wife, for it is she, has just been photographed by a hoard of Japanese tourists; or at least she believes they are Japanese. She was visiting the Cabinet Office [AKA The "Who's My Boss?" Department] and there was something or other going on in the reception as she left. So she was taken out through the staff exit onto Downing Street. It was there, as she walked happily across the road to the security barriers that said hoard started snapping away.
Mrs Wife found the whole thing very amusing and called to tell me. Still laughing.
