Mythbusters[^] tried it, and I can see where it might work - you have to be pretty accurate to stop someone with a small handgun immediately, and the guy with the knife doesn't - he just has to swipe wildy and he'll do a fair amount of damage. Particularly with a machete... 
At that kind of distance, when you assume that "I've got a gun, everyone will do what I say" then suddenly a huge knife is waving in your face - and you know that thing is loaded - I can see the gunman freezing (or not having bullets anyway).
The only instant messaging I do involves my middle finger.

Exactly, you wave a big knife at someone with a gun who is cool and calm and confident in using it then they will coolly and calmly and confidently shoot you - see Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark for historical proof.
You wave a knife at some scrote who doesn't know what he is doing, is nervous as hell (possibly on something), and is expecting you to do exactly what he says because he has a gun then he'll either sh*t it and do a runner, or fire randomly without any aim (assuming it is a real or loaded gun in the first place).

It's a bit risky, true. However I'd imagine actually killing someone when you try to rob them is a lot more difficult than most would think. I mean, you can't really make amends for killing someone. Killing is final. However, you never know who's attacking you and he even might pull the trigger accidentally because he gets surprised by the attack.
I don't think I would fight back like that. Risking life just isn't worth a bit of money. Usually, you should have an insurance for that. So in the end you shouldn't lose much anyways (besides the feel of security...)

So, I have this low-powered Atom-based machine running Windows 7 sitting right next to me that's essentially used as little more than a NAS.
After some seemingly random amount of time of sitting idle, something's causing a hard drive in that machine to start grinding away with no end in sight. As soon as I touch its mouse or keyboard, drive activity stops, so Task Manager / Resource Monitor hardly have anything useful for me to look at by the time I bring them up. I suspect it's MSE running periodically...but lately the drive grinding process seems to kick in more often than usual, and it's driving me bat-sh*t crazy. The fact that it stops within 2 seconds of me hitting the mouse/keyboard just makes things worse.
I'm probably gonna have to just let Resource Monitor or Performance Monitor sit all day, until those same background tasks kick in again to figure out exactly who the culprit is. I'm not really looking for suggestions (but they'd still be welcomed)...just need to vent, as right now I'm feeling like it's my skull that's being drilled.

It may be the indexing process on the disk. I had a similar issue with it, it indexes the disk when the computer/processor is idle.

That would be my guess also, I had also thought maybe defrag but if he's not using it that much the defrag shouldn't be kicking in?

That'd be my thought as well; the machine is essentially a file server, and 99% of it is pretty much static...once a file's defragged, there's no reason it should be shuffled around the next time the defrag process runs. I suspect the indexing service.

I agree. I turned indexing off on my machine and instead use Agent Ransack for searching, it's faster, easier to use and has more options also it's free.
