That's not example code, it's a made-up example. Sql Server is not an object oriented database and is not a fuzzy database. One talks to it using Sql, or using an ORM.
The example sql statement is a pack o' nonsense. I mean, convert C.DOB to a birthday? If you need a function, create one in SQL. There are dozens of manuals on how one creates a function and how to use that function in a query. Real examples, not converting X to X. Even the "formal" function is something that's standard SQL.
1) it's not a real life example
2) it's not real code
3) you don't need it
I'm convinced of 3 since you haven't named a single argument that says "need". I only read "want" from someone who cannot explain what it is he needs.

as you can see the example you have been given come from here! the examples from this wiki page show that the SQL was and is written around database servers such as postgres etc.
The code like Eddy has said wont work on SQL Server!
The create table [^] statement is incorrect as you haven't specified the correct datatypes.
The Select statement wont work either, why? because you would need to create User definded functions[^] for Formal and BirthDay

I have no experience with actually coding object orientated databases or even using them, I just know that they exist.
What I would suggest find out which database engine you are to use and then have a look at it's documentation.

Object oriented databases exist; you can download an open-source version and give it a whirl.
The query looks like he should be introduced to LINQ. Since it still does not explain what he is trying or needs, we can only guess. He's being "fuzzy", and will thus only receive fuzzy answers.

Hi,
I am using MySQL, PHP and PDO to insert a support ticket. Inserting works fine but I want to get the ticket_id after insertions using OUT from the stored procedure. Can you please help.
here is my stored procedure followed by my PDO code for INSERT.

Hi,
I am using PDO in MySQL to insert a ticket. I want to return the ticket number which is the primary key (auto increment) but it's always returning zero.
here is the code I am using:

Hello everyone.
I've got a problem in oracle.
I have a oracle database on a OracleLinux OS (Server A),and a Microsoft SQL Server on another server that has Windwos 2008 R2 as OS (Server B).
I want to connect to SQL Server via oracle and insert some data to it's tables (from server A to server B).
Any suggestions?

Where do you want the process to run? How often does it run?
Simple solution is to export the data from one server and then import it to the other. You can automate this process with some code.
More complex solutions involve specifics of each database. MS SQL Server has tool\system, "SQL Server Integration Service", as part of it which is basically designed for moving data back and forth. One can make this as complex as one wants.
MS SQL Server allows one to set up a ODBC connection and use it. So one could do it in SQL Server. Oracle might have something similar but I wouldn't go that route because setting up ODBC on unix variants is not only a problem but you would need to find a MS SQL Server ODBC driver as well. However, Oracle has a java VM built in so you could use a java only MS SQL Server jdbc driver and do a call like that.
However if it was me I would stay away from the internal solutions because getting everything to work right via permissions, loading, turning everything on, figuring out ports, etc will take more time than writing the code in the first place. So some solution that uses import\export is going to be less frustrating.

Then you need to create a database link.
If you want to control it from the SQLServer side you download and install the Oracle client.
Configure the client and verify connectivity to the Oracle server using Net Manager.
Create a linked server in SSMS using Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle.
This is from memory and might be incorrect, but you should have enough info to google the correct procedure.
If you want to control the link from the oracle side you have a How-to here[^].

INSERT INTO tbl SELECT x UNION SELECT y UNION SELECT z isn't valid Oracle not because of the UNION, but because of the SELECTs.
You could simply change it to INSERT INTO tbl SELECT x FROM DUAL UNION SELECT y FROM DUAL UNION SELECT z FROM DUAL
You could quickly do this manually with a search and replace UNION with DUAL UNION and add one DUAL on the end

I just looked at the database forum here on CodeProject, and its two related forums, and the definition of "database" in those three groups is way beyond the scope of what I'm looking for. Those guys look like the professionals of professionals.
I just want to set up a system that I can use to track a set of people. A spreadsheet is *NOT* the answer in this case. I want a window on my screen with the fields physically separated and so on; i.e., simple without requiring me to solve complex matrix algebra just to keep a list of names, E-mail, and some keywords associated with each member.
I seriously doubt that I'll ever have a thousand people in this system.
So far I have looked on

I welcome suggestions for such a database program.

Can you elaborate on this? By "track" do you mean "find by email and/or keyword", or something else? Do you anticipate increasing the type of data of you may want to manage in the future (e.g. contact phone #, etc.)?
