Nobody want to get "to Birmingham".
Many want to "get away from Birmingham" and preferably as fast as possible...and the same applies to the other cities HS2 will service.

Never discuss money with capitalists or tories -- they've spent far, far more time and energy on thinking up spurious, self-serving arguments than you have.
If you want to discuss people, peoples, nations, the future, aspirations, and/or things that will benefit mankind, take money off the agenda.
Here's one for you personally: How much time does your precious Doctor Who spend on working out how much money he can make?
There's not much point in having heroes if you decide to live a life that is completely antithetic to theirs.

Why give £300,000,000 to a country that can afford nuclear weapons, a space programme and warships at a time when our own people are dying from poverty?
Socialists are dangerous and idealistic and hate the idea of wealth being used to protect their own.
Communism prefers all to be levelled down rather than levelled up, for enter comfort and wealth, exit socialism.
I would prefer the £300,000,000 to be spent on policing, teaching, road maintenance, NHS and Border Controls.

1. Stop talking about money; the topic is "aspirations".
2. One of the reasons that England has managed to survive so long is the wealth it stole from these "foreigners".
3. Stop talking about money; the topic is "aspirations".
4. Stop talking about money, even if the topic is not about aspirations.

It pretty pointless introducing facts to a discussion like this: they just get it moved to the soapbox...

This is something, which you have to take up with your MP's.
IMHO, free money is free, so why not take it if UK is giving. If UK is really want to pass goodies, Ill be happy if this money can be diverted to PaK or Afghan and help them in education etc
cheers,

You are thinking about this in the wrong way. And since you are often bringing this up, let me tell you my opinion.
Every country has thousands of problems to fix, and tens of thousands solutions to improve. So each country has to focus on thousands of things. They can't focus on fixing just one problem, no matter how serious it is.
India has nuclear weapons because two of our neighbors have nuclear weapons, and we are not friends with them. We need to protect ourselves otherwise the secondary problems like 'poor people on the streets' won't matter.
The Space Missions are for a reason, they are not hobby projects. We need those satellites (In one way or other they are helpful to both, poor and rich). I can't justify the Mars mission as I don't have enough information, but I am sure they are much more smarter people than me and they must have their reasons.
And when UK or anyone else gives Aid, there is an agenda behind it. They are not giving away 300 million and say do what you like to do with the money. They are given for a specific reason / specific problem.
We are building our infrastructure, and the scenario with the 'poor people on the street' is slowly improving. No country can fix the problem of poverty right away. You can't fix it with the money also. There are hundred other things you need to fix first.
And the countries which are giving the Aid to other countries are not Utopias. They also have problems to fix. And most of the time it's mutual. They need something in return (even if it's just a relationship they are building).
So whenever this kind of agreements are signed, most of the time we couldn't get the bigger / clear picture / long term vision behind it.

I saw this story last week, and did a little reading due to the inevitable backlash that you allude to.
I learnt about the satellites India now uses to help its poorest and remotest citizens.
I learnt about how India's space program does lots of work on behalf of other countries (who of course pay them for this work).
I learnt about how India's space program employs lots of people, including many British.
I learnt about how some see India's space research and experimentation as vital to allowing India to develop as rapidly as possible, and to improve things further for their people, and to make a positive impact on the wider world too.
Seems like a good idea to me.
