Have you tried the built in network map ?
Control panel > network and sharing then at the top > view full map.
So far I noticed even with network discovery turned off that still works.
You can also launch the exe directly but still looking for the name of it again.
you could also run a script or program that will scan ips. like nmap or something similar.

It's not that effective: mine shows my NAS, but doesn't show any wireless devices such as my tablet, Herself's Wii, her 3DS...

No - mine is locked down pretty tight, including MAC addresses being pre-listed before the connection is accepted by the router, so I pretty much know what is and isn't on my home network.

you have heard of mac spoofing right ?
Anyway I don't have a tablet or phone to test mine with I will have to wait till others come over and Borrow my network and see what info is available.

Spoofing is pretty easy - but it helps if you know what address to spoof! 
It's just another layer of protection over the wireless password (shouldn't be needed, but it costs nothing except a little extra time when I do want to add a device and means I have a list of all device MACs which could be handy if any of them get stolen)

You can check web management interface of your WiFi AP/Router to check MAC address of the devices on the network (in Wireless Statistic/DHCP client list if you're using it), or you can start command prompt and run "arp -a" command to get IP to MAC mappings (but try to ping the IP first). Using MAC address you can get vendor at least... http://www.coffer.com/mac_find/[^]

You could always try \\xxx.xxx.xxx.194 or http://xxx.xxx.xxx.194 see if its presenting a share or web interface.
I use angry IP scanner to port scan devices see what's showing up. Sometimes it even gets the OS right in the listing.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

I saw something that I have never seen before.
The Geminids are not often good viewing here in the UK as this time of year rarely presents clear skies.
However last night was as clear as a bell and having a Dark Sky (I live next to a park so no street lights or houses etc) meant I could really appreciate the views.
Quite a good display generally, but what was surprising was the colour variations.
Distinct Red, Green and Blues were seen, and this is the first time I have witnessed colour variations in meteors within the same shower.
I was glad to get to bed eventually though as it did turn rather cold later on.
For those who didn't see it, unlucky, you will have to wait until the next shower (Quadrantids - Jan 2nd).
The moon was bright, but as the night went on it buggered off westward leaving a much better viewing arena.
Well done Geminids, worth the staying up for.
