Agreed - I don't even own a DVD player any more. I just convert my DVDs to MP4 (or MKV or AVI, whatever floats the boat) on the PC and use an external USB drive which plugs straight into the TV.
Can't be bothered with Netflix - only a 4Mb internet connection out here!

I don't know exactly your configuration and I'm sure you have a pretty good solution, but, time ago I asked how to connect my PC to my TV using DLNA here at ![Green Alien | [Alien]](https://www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/Images/alien.gif) and someone came with a free and really nice option for me:
Serviio[^].
With Serviio, I can have the films directly in as many folders, hard disks... in my computer and it serves them through DLNA to my TV and other devices on the network.
It works wonderfully and from the TV I can select which film, serie,... to see and start, top, ffwd, rewind... as much as I would like to.
And all this without moving a hard disk or having to store the film into a pendrive which is always slow...
In case of series it is super convenient as it automatically stores the last seen chapter...
That needs a DLNA TV, of course or a Raspberry PI connected to the TV acting as a DLNA client.
Also in my laptop I can access all the files from XBMC (another free software that works as a DLNA client) and other devices (cell phones...) from where I can listen to music, see all our pictures and/or view some films.
In fact time ago you helped me configuring the router to set all this up. 
The only drawback: unless you have a really powerful PC (which would make on the fly conversion to an allowed format in your TV) you will have to convert some films to a format that the TV can handle.

What I'd really like is a USB/HDMI device that let me access my NAS direct from my TV, but that probably means Raspberry Pi and me writing something to serve network shares are local USB HDD content (my TV plays most formats, but doesn't have any network connection)

Why not looking at Raspberyy Pi and XBMC? http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Raspberry_Pi[^]
That would leva you with a small Pi behind your TV that could be controlled using your cell phone using the XBMC control app, the Pi should be connected to your NAS directly or through your PC using something like serviio.
This would be easy to set up, powerful and nice on any TV.
OT: Our TV is a Philips one which can play almost every file under the sun (it has problems with DTS only) but the GUI that it shows is not pretty, using a raspberry pi and XBMC this can be solved by using many of their skins, which usually are gorgeous.
PS:
Serviio takes a max of 10 minutes to set up.
XBMC also takes that amount of time.
I don't know about Raspberry Pi... but the RASPBMC looks promising...

I agree you, I have only the wedding day DVD at home, all other things are digital or mere backup copies...
I'm using Serviio in my PC and it works wonderfully, but in this case, my FIL wants it to be on the DVD so...

I work in an open area with glass cubes. It's very difficult to concentrate.
Everyone is on phones. I have speaker crappy music.
I have a person in front of me bobbing their head all day.
Very distracting. I enjoy the guys I work with they all sit their own room.
I initially had a crappy chair with no arms at the end of day programming my wrists hurt.
I made it clear to my boss that it sucks.
The positive is its close to my home. 5 min commute.
1. Put up with until they let me go.
2. Find a new job.
3. Put a bag over my head and monitors
I am leaning to finding another place to work.
Any suggestions ? ? ?

Had enough and quit.
Need the work, but much happier !!!

I sympathize with you. I'm a (very) quiet developer and require a quiet environment in which to work. Unfortunately, my environment is pretty noisy, but thankfully it's work noise, not music or social banter. Still, it makes it impossible for me to work.
So I resorted to playing an endless pink noise (sound of the surf) loop through headphones, which works remarkably well. It doesn't cause listening fatigue and eliminates most of the ambient noise. I can make it available to you if you like.

My beloved brother in-law and his wife are coming up for the weekend, normally not rant material, except he is bringing his 3 year old laptop which has been blue-screening with hdd problems. I asked about the recovery disks that I told him to make when he got it...'uhhh, I didn't have time'  With any luck, I can still make them...or he will be getting Win8 either on a new laptop, or on a bare hdd. Either way, it's going to be so much fun working on someone else's crap...and he's the kind of guy who is very OCD about the tiniest little details. He will want it to be exactly like it now, down to that stupid comic sans for email! Monday cant get here fast enough!

Funny, that sound just like one the things he likes to say about other people...'lack of preparation...emergency...blah, blah'. I, unfortunately, have become the family's IT guru b*tch and therefore have a duty to help. It does sound like a serious issue as well...not something he would be able to manage on his own. I just hope he doesn't want to watch. I hate an audience!

I'v got a Acer ICONIA W510 Windows 8 tablet. There's some kind of graphical indicator[^] that is ALWAYS showing.
AT first I thought it was the battery, but with the cord plugged in and a full battery it still shows up.
I've searched high & low to try to get rid of this. Anyone know how?
If it's not broken, fix it until it is
