Off I go again, travelling on the company's dime, this time for training at a resort in Henderson, NV. I have to say that I'm underwhelmed by this Hilton Resort on Lake Las Vegas. It's all done up like a Mediterranean Villa, with quaint paths and gardens everywhere, and the room is quite nice once I found it with the aid of a team of Sherpa guides I hired in the parking garage. But 90% of the quaint shops in the Villa are "Available" and vacant, with the rest being closed when I arrived well before sunset. There are a couple of restaurants and bars open, but at the price they're asking for a steak, I can raise and butcher a steer, and I'm probably a better cook than any they have on staff.
There's a casino here, but when I walked over for a little action, the sign on the door said the business had "ceased operations." That's Nevada Gaming Commission speak for 'gone bankrupt.' How do you lose money when you own your own casino? Having struck granite instead of pay dirt looking for something to do after driving up here today after work, I went in search of the jacuzzi. To my view, a hotel is best judged by the quality of its plumbing; showers that change temperature unexpectedly get you on my 'never again' list, but I'll put up with lousy plumbing if you offer me a relaxing soak late at night in a jacuzzi accompanied by a refreshing glass of scotch. That defines my pot of gold at the end of a long day driving along the rainbow highway.
A quick glance at the booklet in my room revealed that the pool and jacuzzi are closed at 7PM! It's not even dark at 7PM! It's still 100F out there! I called down to the desk to inquire whether this was merely a typo, or an incredibly boneheaded management policy enacted by a soon-to-be-outgoing management team. I was politely informed that it was not a typo.
Needless to say, I will not again be staying at this dump. If I attend another training at this site, I'll book a cheaper room at a place that has better amenities for a fair price and drive to class. It's really not that hard to get around Las Vegas if you plan your routes and avoid peak hours. On the brighter side, I definitely plan to visit Extreme Ventures while I'm here, since they're only a few miles from the hotel and stay open late enough to get there after class. I'm told by reliable sources that they have reloading supplies that no one else can find. I sure hope so. 
So, what much-hyped venues have you visited lately that have turned out to be Great Disappointments?

"The View" at Monument Valley. Next time (if there is a next time), we'd stay at Goulding's.
The worst thing I noticed there was in the gift shop (of course). Guests get 10% off, but even the Tony Hilllerman books are marked up 20% -- there's a $12 sticker pasted over the $10 cover price. Over at Goulding's (five miles away) you pay cover price.

There appears to be some serious disruption in the UK.
ebay.co.uk has been offline since 20:55. Various web monitoring sites confirm this.
theregister.co.uk was also playing up.
Don't know if akamai is having problems again or someone else in the chain.
