Prior to the release of 8 people were calling it 8 despite the fact it hadn't been officially named and did that change the world?

Heh, I never noticed that before. That's pretty weird, it was definitely marketed as a full version number not 'Vista.1' (Win 6 is Vista), and I'm pretty sure there were fairly major back end changes that justify 7 getting a proper version number bump.
