If it's a major release coming it will be called 9 until they release a final name for it. If it's really going to be 8.2 then the people talking about a major release would be wrong, but that's not about the name. Microsoft have never released a .2 Windows, though, unless you count service packs, so I wouldn't really expect an 8.2.

Windows has never gone from Windows X to windows X.1
Windows 3.1 was the only other Windows to have a .1 and was only there to distinguish itself from 3.11 which was networking.
The whole point of this is that no one at Microsoft has said Windows 9.
