I have had mine for a while now. About 6 months. I really like the phone, especially the screen size.
My wife has an iPhone 5 and she is constantly borrowing mine as she likes mine better.

The lack of a suitable belt clip for carrying is a bit off-putting, but I suppose I'll get used to it. I'm considering a purse for it, but having a hell of a time finding one to match my work boots.

I use none. I am very careful with what I do with the phone and have not faced any trouble yet. I used AVG on S3 I had earlier. Never felt like I needed it.

Same here.
BUT I once was very close to have a problem : I was lost in a crowd at some event, and was texting with my wife so that we could locate. In the middle of the ping-pong texting came a SMS that I opened without looking at it, and it opened my contact list, a facebook app, my browser and tried to connect to some website. Phone was also blocked.
All this triggered by just opening that one SMS. I could then regain access to the phone by removing the battery (on/off-button did not work anymore), and had the luck that I had disabled the data connection (so the website access failed, and possibly a lot of other nasty things in the background). Phone was a Galaxy S1.
Anyway, my wife was mad at me because it took me about 10 minutes to understand what was happening and find a way to restart my phone,and she had been waiting for my answers all along. I have deleted the SMS, so I don't know what it contained exactly.

I'm the same, just got to be careful what apps you install.
AV on a phone slows it down and ruins the battery life.

I use avast and so far I have had no problems with viruses or malware on my phone

I use Avast as well, but I have no idea how good it is: it's never found anything, but I've never seen any "virus-like" activity either...

Other than installing potential infected applications, what is the Galaxy susceptible to? (Honest question as I am going to be looking for a new phone tomorrow).
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

They disabled the "Phoning" functionality, since nobody was using it, but everything else (browsing, texting, using apps, taking pictures, ...) work like a charm.

Any phone that has WiFi and bluetooth capability, IMHO, is susceptible for attack in public places. I have once met a guy in cafe who was sniffing packets from free and open WiFi network provided by cafe. Now, there is nothing that your anitvirus could do about it. So, just be careful.
I just prefer not to do internet banking or online purchase from phone. Other than that, all I have is few songs, photos, messages and contacts which I do not really care if someone reads.

I've been using Android phones for around 6 years with no virus protection and AFAIK no virii either.
Until a virus checker tells you it finds a virus the best anyone can say about is that it doesn't get in the way.

I simply replaced my Galaxy with a Blackberry z10.
I'm sure it is also hackable, but to date it has never been used as a vector to get into my Linux desktops.
Unlike the Galaxy.

It's a 4G touchscreen phone with 128G expansion via SDhC. Galaxy must be amazing!

Just get rid of Samsung apps and install stock standard OS. Or just buy Nexus. Using it for a while now and it is a very well behaved phone.

AVG should do the job. I've been having the S4 for over a year now and used Avast and Lookout also but AVG is still my favorite. Especially the remote admin feature that allows you to locate or lock your device when its lost. I tested it just to see how it works and its great. Location more precise than Lookout. Avast just looks too busy for me
