I feel miserably ignorant I've only read 5 and haven't heard of a lot of them.

It's very UK centric - OK, there is a Samuel Clements in there, but only the one I could see.
A US "classic books" list probably wouldn't mean a lot to UK readers either.

It wouldn't make any difference I don't read a lot of popular stuff, I read a lot of tech books and more stuff like Lewis and Clarks Journal was the lastest non-tech.

And then there's those of us who don't give an elephant about any "classic books" list and just read whatever catches our attention. Because life's too short to care about what other people think you should read.
What is this talk of release? I do not release software. My software escapes leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality assurance people in its wake.

Right on.
I've read one book from that list, The Lord of the Rings. Which is actually 3 books, but apparently that doesn't matter.
I've read plenty of programming books from cover to cover at 1200-1500 pages each. But novels? I simply don't have enough time to sit down and read them. What does he do for a living?

No Lord Of The Rings is one book. That's how it was written and how it was intended to be read. Tolkien was forced into the rather artificial dividing of the work by his publisher and he was never happy with it. Most modern editions reunite the three parts in a single volume in any event.

I had to purchase 3 books to get the whole story.

25,2.
I only managed 0,2 from Crime and Punishment. And to be completely honest, about half of these I had to read, and did not choose to read.

I see Moby Dick is on the list (as if it's ever not on a list). For anyone who hasn't read it, here's the short version:
Rope is awesome. Knots knots, rope, knots, oh yea baby. Also a white whale because reasons.

Not only on the list but at No 2! I hope nobody sees this list and starts there because it will put them off 'classics' for life. It is the very definition of turgid prose!

I have more than half, but others I never heard of...Isn't this list a bit 'local'?

13.02 (Where .02 is Crime and Punishment) but at least I can brag with having read 8 (or so) in my third language which happens to be English.

I have read 11 of those, but if you include film versions then it goes up to 36.

14 for me, and I have 2 more on there that I need to get round to reading. One is Crime & Punishment, which from reading others' comments in this thread, I suspect means that Raskolnikov will remain forever a stranger.
(The Unbearable Lightness of Being has taken me 20 years to get round to, so far)

I've read 8 for definite, a few more I think I may have read but cannot remember them at all.
Another I am half way through (Tristam Shandy), another I gave up on (Lord of the Rings), three I have seen the film but not read, and my grandmother has always lived in Eliot Drive named after George Eliot.
