I'm WFHing today and even though it's been less than an hour am already raging at the total lack of palm rejection in my crappy Lattitude's touchpad. This is made worse by the fact that Dell removed the disable when mouse is plugged and disable within 1/n seconds of a keystroke features from the driver meaning that any time I try to type the touchpad sends my cursor flying all over the screen. The only option I can find is one to totally disable the touchpad, but it's buried deeply enough that I'd never be able to find it without help, nor could I get there with only the keyboard; and I don't want to always have to drag a mouse with me for meetings when I'm going to barely touch my laptop.
Can anyone recommend a 3rd party utility that works in win7 to do the automatic on/off for me; even a manual toggle would be acceptable if the app is keyboard drivable and could be pinned to my start menu for easy access.

Yeah, mine has a feature called "Touch Guard" but it doesn't work well so I see the same stuff.
I took to actually keeping the Dell TouchPad utility in my tray (the little TSR thingies near the time/date) and turn it on/off as needed. Even when the touchpad is off the the pointstick (eraser thingy in the middle of the keyboard) still works to allow me to turn the touchpad back on without connecting a mouse.

That should partially work as a short term fix; while typing this reply I managed to click a touchpad button (which is still enabled for pointy stick use).  But if I can get it to work Rage has found what should be a proper fix.

SOLVED SOLVED SOLVED!!!
All - I've read through this and many forums and have found no solution. I figured it out on my own, so I am happy to share with you!
This solution applies to those who do not have a touchpad disable button on an F key at the top of your keyboard and have the Synaptics driver that does not show the option to disable the touchpad when the external device is present. This also applies to those where the registry key update does not work (as it did not for me).
Here's the solution.
1. Go to the Dell website and get the latest driver for your touchpad. Install it.
2. Once installed, go to c:\program files\synaptics\syntp in your windows explorer.
3. Open the program called DellTpad.exe (there is also one called DellTouchpad.exe -- don't use this one)
4. Once open, click Device Settings.
5. And voila, the old checkbox is there at the bottom! Just click to make this active and it works like a charm.
