This is what I mentioned in my earlier post : there was a discussion about it back in February, and it was refuted (your article), but it was actually the case (my news item this morning).

So this was already an assumption[^], but it just got to the news this morning that Schumacher was indeed injured because he had a GoPro fixed to his helmet.

No, he was injured because he headbutted a rock.
|
|
|

which was only made possible by the fact that the GoPro shattered his helmet first.

With or without the helmet shattering he would be okay if he hadn't assaulted the rock in the first place. It's a very sad situation, but he chose to go off piste and had the accident as a result. Did the GoPro make a difference? I'm not in a position to say. Did going off piste contribute? Absolutely.
For what it is worth, I have skied and I have been off piste. The choice to be in a dangerous situation was mine.
I have also been 'on the piste', but that is another story.

Didn't he go off piste to help someone who fell ? I am not sure about the story at this point.
Anyway, I don't want to excuse any behavior whatsoever, I just point out that the fact he had a camera on the helmet did not help and maybe aggravated the result, which is not necessarily what you'd first think about when putting it there.

Was the GoPro harder than the rock?
|

It was undamaged, which is highly possible: I have seen a GoPro shot away by a car that hit in a WRC event and not damaged either. Good stuff !

I have crashed at speed (more than once) with gopro on my helmet on some of these occassions the go pro has released from its sticky mount on the helmet and pinged off down the mountain.

Yes, the rock was smashed to pieces (could have been Schumacher's head though)

How do you know it was a GoPro? I cannot see that mentioned by name in the article.
The helmet cracking can be a benefit as it uses up energy, moving it away from the brain.
At the end of the day, he made a decision to go off-piste, and he hit a rock. If he had no head protection, his skull hitting the rock would have likely been worse.
Some people (and not saying that this applies in this case) think they are indestructable because they wear a helmet which makes them more likely to take risk and ski outwith their capability.

It was on the radio news this morning (in France). Here a report[^].
DaveAuld wrote: moving it away from the brain
Well in this very vase, it seems that it exposed the head to the rock, so his skull more or less hit the rock through the shattered helmet.
DaveAuld wrote: indestructable because they wear a helmet
Very true, and this is exactly what I have pointed out when it was first discussed here one year ago.

It was reported by JL Moncet, a French journalist who talked to Ralf Schumacher, and who used to live comment formula one grand prix.

Many skydiving schools prohibit people from wearing helmet cams for the first 200 jumps, as there is a tendency for people with helmet cams to lose situational awareness and to take unnecessary risks.

And if he didn't have a GoPro affixed to his helmet, would he have even been wearing a helmet?
