Just when I'm thinking the world is hopelessly fracked, and the immortal words of Yeats in "The Second Coming" will not stop echoing in my neocortex:

And, for a moment, I remember that the world is always new every moment, and there is ... hope. If Godel, or Cantor, were alive I'd ask them: "do you think the Aleph of the infinity of hope is greater than the Aleph of the infinity of hopelessness ?"
That I forget that moment of clarity so easily, and scuttle back into the comfort of the darkness of small-self, almost a kind of instinctual retreat: that seems to be a problem that has lasted too many years, and the eternity of the moment of clarity is always so brief.

It is not necessarily about congratulating them personally, but perhaps raising awareness of the individuals and their personal contribution to making things better. I think it is blatantly obvious they aren't visiting here, but does go someway as to demonstrate your lack of cultural and social naivity.
Why does the news in the UK tell us about the super typhon hitting Japan.....it isn't going to directly effect the country in a way that will change 99.99% of peoples behaviours.
Why say Rest In Peace to a dead person, they aren't going to hear you and turn round and say "why thanks, I may just do that."

I think you should go somewhere else where your very narrow way of looking at things is appreciated.
Congratulations are appropriate here because a part of what CodeProject has always offered is exposure to the outside world for coding mushrooms who don't get out much. Helping brilliant coders to see how what they do relates to the outside world of the Great Unwashed is just one of the services we offer to members. Posts like this one lead us to venture into new realms of knowledge, expand our intellectual horizons, and improve our chances of getting laid before we're dead by becoming more interesting. I wouldn't put any money on your odds, but who knows? You might get lucky...

I'd say that developing one's madness ... making it unique ... is a life's work: so much of our madness is given to us by our ruthless primate genes, and our socialization process, and the cultural matrix that encapsulates it, and those inevitable wounds that we, and others, and life, inflict.
Daniel Defoe's classic essay, "A Modest Proposal" ... sometimes referred to as "from cradle to crockpot" ... is a fine foamy-headed draught of literature that may help you along the path: [^].

So far this year, it's been incredibly mixed.
On the highlights side, I was accepted as a Pluralsight author, am giving my first two talks at NDC London in December, and had some awesome holidays.
Weighing up on the other side. My sister had two strokes this year. My mother was rushed into intensive care a couple of weeks ago and underwent some major surgery. Jen's uncle died yesterday.
I'm pretty sure that the negatives are weighing more than the positives in the karma stakes here.

That was my week last week.
Took our daughter to the doctor because of 'adnormal skin growth' around her navel. She had had umbilical surgery a few years back and something didn't look right. But... all was well; an internal stitch decided to pop out.
The next day, my wife's best friend diagnosed with breast cancer...
But, prognosis is good, so... we soldier on.
Hope your life turns to the upside more than the down.

Seriously, my life is good. I'm not complaining here - in both my sister's and my mother's case, it could have been so much worse, and with Jen's uncle, it was a blessing when he died as he was in a really bad way.
I hope things turn out well for your daughter and your wife's friend.

At least it could've been worse, like when all the good stuff did NOT happen... And even then things could've been worse. Best not to think about that...

+Moved platforms and a change of scenery felt great, despite not knowing the people or the plant and having one big learning curve.
-On the family front youngest being suspected of having very mild aspergers and dyscalclia which makes things very difficult in dealing with her behaviours and trying to do homework....glad the wife has more patience than me, I get frustrated as hell.
-loosing 3 close friends at work in the space of as many months.
-I stumbled across an overseas job to a pal that she thought she would never see happen in her line of work and ended up getting it and she set off to restart her life in sunny Qatar. Moved out there with her boyfriend, couple of months later got engaged and then a month later he was dead...deaply felt for her, she is devasted as you can imagine.
~Now we are in the world of unknown waiting to see what happens at work with regards to potential spin-off or sell off and what the impact will be.
As they say, chin-up and soldier on and never let the b'stards grind you down!
