Microsoft has collected all the stats about its products and services into a report which was released on November 13th. These numbers provide insight into the massive amount of users Microsoft has across the company. "All the lonely people, where do they all belong?"

Is Windows really used by 1.5 billion people? Or are they talking merely about "licenses sold" here? I mean, how do you accurately count the number of people using Windows? What about people with multiple devices? What about the people using pirated copies? I know, it's all about the money in the end, so 1.5 billion licenses sold is 1.5 billion licenses sold. But it doesn't mean there are 1.5 billion people using them. It's maybe more, due to piracy, but most likey less than that.

He makes some good points, but there are some massively hubristic claims there. Programmers don't rule the world (at least no more than any other relatively useful profession such as surgeons or automotive engineers).
The idea that we could all unite and hold the world to ransom is ludicrous.

Without software: Phones don't ring. Cars don't start. Planes don't fly. Bombs don't explode. Ships don't sail. Ovens don't bake. Garage doors don't open. Money doesn't change hands. Electricity doesn't get generated. And we can't find our way to the store.
You know, all that worked before software, before transistors, and money certainly changed hands even before electricity. As to finding our way to the store, there's this archaic concept of actually communicating with your fellow man and asking directions.
And when the earth gets a direct hit from a sufficiently powerful CME (which is inevitable) will all discover again how to ask directions, grow our own food, and spin wool.
