Rage, I don't see the problem. Everyone should do this at least once a year and early January seems apposite.
If they are either real friends or important contacts, they'll be in touch.
Of course, there's a flaw in this plan: If everyone does it, they'll have lost your info too. Oh well, bummer!

Actually, this speaks volumes to bad software design. At least Outlook saved the deleted stuff in the recycle bin (I read your "Saved" post) but the software on your phone should always, always, always make a backup of important data like contact information. If it can't make a backup, it should tell you. If you want to delete it permanently, it should ask you. This kind of stuff drives me nuts, because it's so simple to store deleted contacts in a recovery database on the phone.
It's a pity that the likes of Google and Microsoft and Apple can sue each other all day long for patent infringements, but we users can't sue them for their sh*tty software. Wouldn't that change the world, mwahaha!
