We'd store some files on a file server. The filesnames were unique by date and time up to milliseconds. Then the customer got a new super fast server and files went missing. Turned out multiple files could be written in the same millisecond and the last would overwrite the first. Workaround: Thread.Sleep(1); Laugh | :laugh:

I've also had problems with a piece of multi-threaded software (I didn't write it). Loading different pieces of data took many seconds, so the programmer decided to multi-thread, but wasn't very aware of the many pitfalls and solutions of multi-threading (or of loading data, I could load all his data instantly). Unfortunately there was no way I could change the data loading or the multi-threading all that much, as everything in the application depended on it. Rewriting would take a whole lot of time and it was actually already rewritten from an older version just recently. In the end I got it working 'alright', for all but two users. Workaround? if (userName == "x" || userName == "y") { SomeMultithreadedFunction(null); SomeOtherMultithreadedFunction(null); } else { // multi-threaded solution }. What are the nulls passed in to the functions? System.Threading.Tasks.Task objects as everything was implemented using Tasks Laugh | :laugh:

A current issue regarding SQL Server 2008 R2, if you change a user's name in AD SQL Server still returns the old name via SYSTEM_USER.
We have a bunch of stored procedures that return SYSTEM_USER to identify who is running processes and confirm their permissions.

There are some solutions including bouncing the server(not possible currently) and installing patches(sysadmin won't currently allow) and others that I have tried and intermittently work.

So now the database table holding permissions, for actions users can perform, contains the person's old and current names to get around this SQL Server ~~feature~~ bug.

A lesson on how consultants can make a difference in an organization.

Last week, we took some friends to a new restaurant, ' Steve’s Place,' and noticed that the waiter who took our order carried a spoon in his shirt pocket.

It seemed a little strange. When the busboy brought our water and utensils, I observed that he also had a spoon in his shirt pocket.

Then I looked around and saw that all the staff had spoons in their pockets. When the waiter came back to serve our soup I inquired, 'Why the spoon?'

'Well, 'he explained, 'the restaurant's owner hired Andersen Consulting to revamp all of our processes. After several months of analysis, they concluded that the spoon was the most frequently dropped utensil. It represents a drop frequency of approximately 3 spoons per table per hour.

If our personnel are better prepared, we can reduce the number of trips back to the kitchen and save 15 man-hours per shift.'

As luck would have it, I dropped my spoon and he replaced it with his spare. 'I'll get another spoon next time I go to the kitchen instead of making an extra trip to get it right now.' I was impressed.

I also noticed that there was a string hanging out of the waiter's fly.

Looking around, I saw that all of the waiters had the same string hanging from their flies. So, before he walked off, I asked the waiter, 'Excuse me, but can you tell me why you have that string right there?'

'Oh, certainly!' Then he lowered his voice. 'Not everyone is so observant. That consulting firm I mentioned also learned that we can save time in the restroom.

By tying this string to the tip of our you-know-what, we can pull it out without touching it and eliminate the need to wash our hands, shortening the time spent in the restroom by 76.39%. '

I asked quietly, 'After you get it out, how do you put it back?'

'Well,' he whispered, 'I don't know about the others, but I use the spoon.'

Recently I embarked on a mission to find a new place to rent...Tenancy application for the new place require me to hand out so much personal information it really makes me feel insecure...on the other hand I have no choice but to give these info or else I cannot get a new place to stay...

What they are asking for ?
Passport
Driving License
Pay Slips
Current and previous rental address
Current and previous employer details
Medicare card
Current utility bill
Bank statement

How hard it is for someone to use all those documents I just gave to agent to use for some sinister purpose like taking out a new shiny credit card on my name.. ?

My father-in-law did not ask for such level of details before marrying his daughter to me !!!

What would you do in such situation ? Makes me wonder do they really need all those info to identify me as a genuine renter ? Mad | :mad:

Is your future landlord some big rental company? If yes, you are kind of OK - they tend to require way too much paperwork, but it is relatively unlikely for them to abuse your personal information.

My problem is that paperwork goes to property owner before he/she says OK... and how reliable the ghost of property owner whom you don't see/meet/hear ?

We talk about privacy on the internet but this is literally abuse of the power given to rental agents to get as much info from you as possible in a physical form...

As an owner in Oz, I don't see the paperwork, I am informed of the details but never see the doco. I resides with the agency. I am however appalled at the detail I am supplied by some agencies. Job details, bank holdings and current salary, feels intrusive even from this side.

However I do agree with the level of vetting an agency does, 1 crappy tenant and you can lose a major part of your capital.

They can't assume you have a passport or Medicare card.
They are not allowed to ask for a Driving License (in the U.S.).

Pay slips or bank statement I can understand... They want to make sure you can afford the rent. Just redact any account numbers.

Addresses make sense... They want to check with your previous landlord to make sure you're alright... Well, current address makes sense... Previous is a bit much.

Passport/license is just so they can make sure you are who you say you are. I assume they just need "Governmnet-issued photo ID" of some sort, not both of those.

As for medicare... That's just none of their business, and depending on where you are, I wonder if it might even violate some discrimination law to even request it...

So I can see how SOME of that is justified, but ALL of it? Bit overboard... I'd steer clear. Might be phishy, if you catch my meaning...

Medicare is justified if you are a welfare recipient or retired. Again, it all goes to the ability to afford the rent (gross income less medical expenses, etc.).

Previous address is necessary if you happen to move alot. I'm surprised they don't require a drugs test. Landlords here in NZ have been experiencing problems with P users and drug labs.

The difficult may take time, the impossible a little longer.
