You see - there's a difference - you go laughably ballistic whenever anyone even slight maligns (in your opinion) China. I, on the other hand, have no shortage of posts criticizing pretty much everywhere that deserves it - and criticizing the US has never been omitted.
You see - that's the neat thing about living here - we're allowed to, and in fact supposed to criticize the government. Yeah - we had a McCarthy era - and thankfully escaped it. we've blocked huge numbers of Chinese IP addrs from our site. for some reason they like to run bots which download everything (including multi-MB ZIPs) on our site every 30 minutes.
we're not going to pay for bandwidth to keep their bots fed.

I generally only monitor the ftp traffic for hacking attempts. When I first started really watching it a few years ago, it was shocking to me how many attempts were being made to 'break in' as well as the lack of a built-in mechanism (server '08) for defeating the type of dictionary attacks that were being used. When I started checking into the IP addresses, the vast majority were originating from China. For server '08, my only defense is the IP blacklist, so I got a list of current Chinese ISP blocks and wrote a utility to import them into IIS. Worked like a charm! Hacking attempts dropped off by at least 75%. The other thing I did was to create a new FTP user called administrator with a password of... (you can't tell anyone else OK?) 'admin'. In their read-only private directory is a lone text file that kindly asks them to bugger off.
I have noticed a new round of hacking in the last couple of weeks, mostly from the middle east and Amsterdam. It seems like these hackers must maintain and share a list or something. Also, the attacks are getting more creative, using the hostname and even keywords from the homepage. One of these days, and soon, I will either upgrade to server '12 which has dynamic IP blocking built in, or try to get the ftp working under apache (or other) either under windows or in a VM.

One reason is to find a proxy server to get to other web sites. A few years back, I was looking at some logs of a filtering appliance that we kept changing between wide open and extremely closed (long story) and at one point discovered World of Warcraft traffic coming from China.

Exactly. Windows has been consistently less than 70% of visitors on all my websites for the last 10 years, dropping to about 50% in one year. It has picked up a bit recently.
So am I lead to believe that the vast majority of non-windows users run Microsoft office, when its still not available for Linux, and wasn't available for many year on Apples OSes. What other MS software could fill the remainder? It doesn't make sense.

Oh my, thanks a lot for reminding me that I must revisit Hades and make a deal with the landlord in order to figure out the bare essential distributable libraries needed for CR XI through field definitions. This is not a programming question, merely an expression of disgust!
