A tool to convert any file into an image in order to share it by simply providing a link to an image? Obviously the downloading person also has to have this tool installed to convert it back.
I had the idea yesterday and for the fun of it I implemented it. If you would see some use for it, I would extend it with automatic upload to imgur (it doesn't violate their terms) and publish it as a tip/trick.

Are we talking about an image of the file as it would be if (for example) opened in Word or Excel?
Or the binary file content "packed" into a bitmap format?
And if the later, why would I want to share a packaged version when I could share it as a ZIP, RAR, or in the original format via Dropbox / Google Drive / OneDrive? All I can see is it making it harder to distribute because the recipient needs the "unpack" software - for PC, Linux, Mac, iOS, Android, or whatever he is using... What am I missing that is an advantage here?

Opening the image-link in the browser would "instantly" give you the data, no further clicks on "download now" required and no other hassles like ads, captchas, possibly having to register first,.. just that you have to have the tool for the reversion. (Instead of having to open the image-link in the browser the tool could accept the link itself.)

So...really all you are doing is changing the extension and posting it to an image sharing site, hoping that they don't reject it when they can't make a thumbnail?
And that when it gets to the browser as an image the data stays there instead of being replaced with a big red "X" box?

So you need software to "depackage" it...which means finding it, downloading it, installing it, finding you have the wrong version, getting the iOS version for your Android, swearing, ...
Seriously, all I can see you doing is annoying the people who run image sites like imgur!
I wouldn't use it by preference: ZIP/RAR and download works for me - if nothing else I can virus check it before I open the file.

Not necessarily - the idea of steganography is that you can't tell there is data embedded in the image. From what I read, he's not trying to do that.

If so, yours truly is in the process (when he gets off his big fat arse) of preparing an application[^], for release, that does this.

It's not intended to hide the data in an existing image. The output image would be only the source data packed into an image so it could be uploaded to an image sharing site or for whatever other purpose you could find.
