If you are working alone and get stuck it's important to take a step back sometimes to review what you are doing and make sure you are on the correct course.
If you are trying to solve a specific problem take a break from your research and go for a walk, take some fresh air or spend some time on the toilet. Especially the toilet, or shower. That's where the real epiphanies tend to materialize.
Who's with me!? Toilet style problem solving.

What if it's just the shower? Any takers then?

Fresh air is overrated. Every time I switch on the ventilator, it lifts off into the air and flys around.

I know what you mean, just getting away from the screen can be enough. A toilet break or getting a brew, anything like that. Sometimes, my walk to the tube on my commute home can be the most productive time of the day if I have a big problem to overcome.

I'm going to Austin
Can I walk on the streets there during the day ?
i.e., are there adequate sidewalks and traffic signals for pedestrians ?
Or, will I need to drive everywhere ?

Austin is a very pedestrian-friendly city. Downtown there are a lot of restaurants, bars, hotels and it has a regional draw for all kinds of music. Crime is quite low there so you can do your thing at most times of day and in various states of soberness.

It depends on the area you are going to visit and when. Most of downtown is pretty walkable, but starting now until the middle of September, expect to sweat like crazy walking anywhere during the day.
For anywhere outside the core of downtown you will want to drive. The public transportation is crap so I wouldn't count on it unless you planned your destinations on bus routes ahead of time.
There are a lot of events going on in town, most of which have a pretty big impact on getting around downtown, so I'd keep that in mind. For example, the ROT rally[^] is going on this weekend.

4th Street at night is very happening place in the downtown. Also if you have time the view from the Mount Bonnell is very pleasant at sunset, I don't remember the name but we visited a nice cafe near the river there. The office hours traffic is crazy in Austin, so try to avoid that.
