Oh I get that, that's why I'm in no rush. I'm content with 8.1 for now. To me "no start menu" was never a valid reason not to upgrade away from 7.

I didn't like the fact that they removed the Start button, I mean Why??? Why would you remove such a critical piece of the UI??
But what it really showed me what how far out of touch MS is from their users. If they can remove the Start Button with nary a thought, what's next?? It's scary.
Then, Wino 10 comes along and, to me, it's not much different than 8. So I see no reason (again) to downgrade.

Untold millions rely on that little button every day. When the removed it, the panic meter worldwide went off the scale.
Again, the point isn't the button - it's the decision making process that allows a company with such great influence to remove something EVERYONE uses.

It's a decision over a button. As in, big deal. Who cares? It was a decision over a button. Dunno about you, but I've got better things to do with my time than freak out about that.

I really don't give a rats ass about the button either..
But people really did go into a panic about it... Why? because users hate change.
So what happens when they decide to change/remove/modify something that really IS significant..
The point is they didn't give two sh*ts about their users... They just went off and did it.

I'm saying it's infantile to assume that A: Microsoft doesn't give a sh*t about their users and B: people need to get a life if it's that big of a deal to them.
MS did put the button back. So they do care.

A: I ALWAYS assume MS doesn't care. There's ample evidence to back that up and there's no reason to assume otherwise. They care about one thing only: $$$
B: Businesses rely on stable platforms to keep the money coming in. Changes break things, and broken things == lost revenue.
For a company relying on software and OS's that are stable, large scale changes are scary. I've had more than a few clients who have refused to upgrade until at least SP2, because they KNOW that anything sooner means trouble... How do they know that you ask? experience dealing with MS products.
I don't know of a single company that is using Win 8 or plans to go to Win 10... Really, I don't... All of my clients are on Win 7.
For a independent dev who support companies, it means lost time & money for me to have to stop and spend months learning new things because MS went and changed things.
Consider the discussion about VS2015. Some here are reporting the usual complaints. I haven't tried it yet, but after 30 years of using MS products for development, I know what to expect. With every single version of VS they make the same mistakes. One peave of mine is that they move or rename IDE functions. In VS2010 the shortcut for some things is totally different than in 2012, same for 13, and same for 15 be you sure!
So the summary is, they keep pumping out what THEY think you want, and they don't really understand their users.
Just my 2 cents.

I installed it to my laptop just so I could test applications and see if there are any quirks our users might experience.
Plus, Microsoft left me a nice little present that was placed on my menu bar; I just had to open it!

It is the new current version of Windows. Regardless of whether it contains improvements, gremlins or whatever, but everyone that writes Windows-software will want to know if anything will be changing.
They don't want it because it works for them; they'll find out that it no longer works for them once time progresses. As XP, so will Seven go in time.

Feel free to go ahead and ignore it. I look forward to reading about how you respond to your customers a few days/weeks/months down they road when they tell you they've found a compatibility problem with an app you've sold them, and you tell them you haven't yet started testing on it because you don't get "what's so fascinating about it".

Thanks to whomever it was that posted the link to this tool the other day.
I have downloaded the x64 & x86 of Professional and am currently downloading the x64 & x86 of Home. Hoping I can use this to install for customers who have sh*tty internet connections. They still do exist.
Anyone know if these can be used to update an existing Windows installation and also on a fresh HDD?
If I can install on a fresh HDD, do I only need to enter a valid Windows Vista/7/8/8.1 License key, or do I need to some how get a Windows 10 key from Microsoft?

As I understand it you can use that downloaded media to do the upgrade from 7/8 to 10 in order to get your key for 10 - one of the guys at the office did it like that. Then you want a fresh install you can format and install 10 on that PC without the need for a key because somehow it has tied the install to the hardware. But it sounds like you have to do the upgrade 1st.

If I'm installing it on a VM or new machine with a clean install, will it work if I pop in my Win7 DVD or put in a Win7 key, like the upgrades did in the old days?

Not for me it didn't but you can run it (in a VM at least, I haven't tried an HDD) without a product key at all for the moment. Just skip the entry pages. Don't know when the 'you must activate' messages will start but for trial purposes, who cares?
