Aside: in C# is the absence of if(! whatever == null) { do some stuff; } equivalent to "swearing" ?

Another dubious linguistic research project seems to contradict the "impoverished vocabulary" theory of swearing: [^]. Newspaper coverage here: [^].
"Overall the findings suggest that, with the exception of female-sex-related slurs, taboo expressives and general pejoratives comprise the core of the category of taboo words while slurs tend to occupy the periphery, and the ability to generate taboo language is not an index of overall language poverty."
I'm not about to pay Elsevier to get to read the whole article, but there's no information provided in the abstract or the newspaper coverage as to the sample size of the study, and the methodology ... that always raises doubts in my mind as to any conclusions/hypotheses of a study.

Further, there has long been an informal consensus that swearing frequency is related to occupational roles, social context (work vs. home vs. social interaction with strangers), socio-economic status, and the intensity of stress and life-change. And, those adopting "deviant" social identities predicated upon a pattern of challenging some perceived "establishment," or "power structure," often, in their sub-cultures, manifest language that is deliberately, dramatically "antipodal."
