Spent half a day trying to implement autocomplete in JScript.NET (that dead language from Microsoft). No success. Apparently it can consume generics but you cannot declare your own.  . Sent email to ERP vendor but no reply so may be this is a lost cause.
Then found out everyone in Australia need to fill Census or you will get slugged $180 per day. WTF!!!. This year they want your name and address as well. Lets see what happens. #CensusFail: Why people are worried about the census - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)[^]

If I recollect what I heard on the radio a few days ago, that they'll store the name and addresses separately and that there will be no link to put them back together. They'll apparently put together some anonymous names against addresses when there's a need for whatever - I'm not entirely sure I understand this fully.
Besides, the nice lady from the ABS who spoke on the radio stated confidently that the system is basically [drumroll please] 'unhackable'. 
All the while I was thinking it could be a honeypot since hacking it could gain the names, addresses, and all sorts of personal information. I'm not yet entirely sure I want to fill it out.

In the Netherlands, you have to all but ask permission from the local council if you want to move house. The NL government knows more about me than the British government ever did.
You'd think they'd have learned something from WW2, but the Dutch are a hard-headed lot.

SO, me wonderizes this question.
If you get fined until you turn in your copy, they need to mark you down as having turned in your copy - which means you've given them your name-and-address, anyway. If it's bar-coded, swap with your neighbors or they know to whom it was sent, anyway.

In Canada the government dropped the long census form. I have a mate who works at the Australian Bureau of Statistics and they followed the Canadian experience and watched (sadly) the effect it had on Canada's ability to make forecasts and decisions based on demographics. They were essentially reduced to guessing who, and how many, where where.

I totally get that there are privacy concerns and a general level of distrust in government's ability to get anything right. I lived for 20 years in Canberra and know deeply the feeling that anyone who works for the government only works there because they can't get a real job.
I've worked for the Australian Government a number of times and the people who I worked with, in my departments and others, we as smart and as dumb and as motivated and as lazy as anyone working in any other job. And yet we trust our deepest, darkest, most personal secrets to those who write apps we download for free on our phones.
Your address is in the phone book. Your spending habits are with Visa and their "trusted partners". Your most personal conversations and photos are with whichever service de jour you're using to send them. Your emails are with your IT department. Your entire life might even be on Facebook for everyone to see.
And yet people complain about filling out a tiny fraction of this in s strictly controlled manner under the watchful eyes of everyone who distrusts government in order to ensure data isn't leaked or compromised. And frankly all this information can be gathered or inferred in other ways. I bet Google could probably get your census 90% of the way there automatically without any input at all.
So stop bitching about doing something that actually helps a country distribute limited resources efficiently. Stop whining about a country trying to work out where to build schools and hospitals and roads. Put it in perspective with the information you give out when you sign up for loyalty programs or use a Visa card or send an email to or from a GMail account or store something private and potentially embarrassing on your phone.
It's about being part of a highly functioning and improbably efficient society and doing your tiny bit to help direct it. It's not about you. You're - frankly - not that important. It's about your community.

I never download any app without checking what permissions it request. It is not just about information they are asking, it is about making it compulsory for everyone. When you join any service it is by choice and not by force. If government is good at using that information we would not have road congestion and ailing health system and high cost of living. It pains me that they want to collect all the information and then can share it with anyone they like and you have no say in it.

I am more than happy to have a big long discussion about road congestion. It's one of my favourite topics.
It has not a lot to do with the governement. It's about everyone else having the "it's just me" attitude.
I think when everyone gets their licence they need to
1. Prove they can drive a car safely
2. Prove they can play a Galaga up to level 20 (to model the craziness of cars coming at you)
3. Demonstrate they can change a flat tyre, top of the oil and washer fluid, and can jump-start a car without blowing the computer
4. Do a course on shock-wave theory[^]

The complete illogic of this astounds me, particularly the $1800 fine for providing incorrect information.
So, you want to update your census information, so you send forms to all your citizens. Okay, so you're admitting that you don't know what the correct information actually is. So how the elephanting elephant can you fine someone $1800 for providing incorrect information after implicitly admitting to not having the correct information!?
Am I missing something, or is the Australian government really that stupid?

My son and I saw this at the STEM Conference in DC[^]. If you get the chance to visit, go there. It's every two years. I'm told there's one in California on alternate years, but I can't find it.
