Of course you can convert them. There may be some data loss in the process, but Pete's Patented Squeezy Data Blender Algorithm will do the trick nicely. With this, I can convert from any format to any format with only (potentially) significant loss of data

Depends, actually. If Type 1 and Type 2 are simple types (int, long, float, string, etc...) then yeah, no sympathy for those developers.
If Type 1 and Type 2 are large classes with no common inheritance hierarchy? I could understand a novice developer not knowing where to start with that problem.
