There are several variations of Murphy's law out there, but I have always subscribed to the fairly simple dual-stage-rule:
1. Anything that can go wrong, will.
2. If something can go wrong in several ways, it will go wrong in the worst way.
This has once again proven true for me.
I flushed the toilet and noticed the water was really slow flowing into the tank. It's late, time for bed really, but I lift the tank lid and jiggle things around. Nothing happens. Yeah, big surprise, I know.
Next I figure I will turn the water inlet valve on the wall on-off-on a couple of times. Big mistake. Huge.
You just know you are screwed when the handle snaps off in your hand and the water starts gushing out. And it is in my downstairs bathroom, so although turning off the main water valve helps, there is still a lot of water in the pipes.

That wasn't the worst way possible.
The main water valve snapping would've been quite a bit worse.

I think you are trying to jinx me.
Fortunately the main valve is of a bit higher quality and it looks like they used stainless steel screws - unlike the broken valve...

There's probably a tank in the attic (or similar place) and they generally have an "extra" tap on them which cuts the amount of water you will lose to a (relatively) trivial amount.

No, most houses (certainly in the UK) have a cold water storage tank to "even out" the pressure from the mains. Normally a kitchen tap will feed directly off mains supply (for health and safety reasons) but a bathroom tap comes from the tank.

Ah ok. That makes sense. My house doesn't have that. Unless it is cleverly hidden away in one of the walls or something like that  .
There is no tank in my attic, just the central HVAC stuff (furnace/heater + AC cooling coil).

Those tanks exist on the Swedish countryside as well, to compensate for underdimensioned pipes. Or when you have your own well and pump.
I have never seen them elsewhere.
But then again, British plumbing is famous outside of Britain.
Having your drains on the outside of the wall is one thing, at least they're easy to exchange when they freeze.
But I'll never understand your showers. A 2 kW flowheater where you adjust the temperature using the flow. That is absolutely icy for a whole minute until it gets lukewarm at best, and when you have adjusted the temperature the flow is just a drizzle.
And then, when you want to rince out the shampoo and soap, the residual heat has transferred to the teensy bit of water in the heater. So this time you get completely scolded.

Not ours!
Our shower pulls 40A peak (I measured it yesterday since I have a clamp meter to measure the PC for my UPS decision) and will heat to a temperature even Herself can't use: I set it at 5, she sets it at 7 and it goes to 9 before it hits the "red bit" 
The flow is via a pump to regulate that as well, though only two settings "low" and "high".
But I know what you mean: I've sworn at far, far too many British Hotel showers for just the reasons you give!

My house is fused to 16A three phases, so I couldn't get much more power out. But then again, I don't need more power.

I hate those poxy showers. We have a big round shower head that comes straight off the hot water tank, and its hot, and drenches you in hot water that's thermostat controlled.

Ditto, if you're the first to shower in the morning it takes approx three seconds to get the proper temperature as the pipes are full with cold water.

The UK is so backwards in so many ways. The Italians do it well, bathroooms, and fittings, and tiles for that matter, all high quality stuff. Its what ours is. A big marble walkin shower, and its wide, a meter wide, which I need since I am almost 2 meters tall and broad with it. Some of the shower cabins you get in the UK I can barely get in and close the door!

Ours is a walk in shower as well, alas only 90 cm wide. But we have a "waterfall" shower. Love it!
My wife's first comment was, "But can you shower on the floor?"

I have seen water fall taps, but not showers. Doesnt the stream tend to come out as one wide flow?

No it's not one of those.
It's called "waterfall" because it's as wide as I am, and the flow is ridiculous. But it's in fact just an oversized regular shower.
I guess that's marketing for you.

If you could add a reservoir to the waste pipe, paint it black, and have it say in a closet under the stairs, it could act as a bit of a heater.

The only problem with a cheap solution is that the shower is on the ground floor.

In France we have pressure regulators, the mains is under high pressure, and all water is drinkable in the house.

It would have been nice if it was possible to place a bucket under the broken valve. Unfortunately you can barely fit a small coffee cup under it.

Did any one else watch this clip and think that the key word in artificial intelligence is "artificial". David Hanson should get out more...walk in nature, communicate with humans. Hell even dogs would help!
