I don't agree for it's not literature. If it is then we should include EVERY song written since the Nobel introduction and even screenplays for movies, tv series and videogames.

Then we should review every Nobel Prize for Literature winner and check if he still has the Prize or if it should go to someone else.

I'm doing this from iPad. instead, of selecting text I upvoted you. This was in complete error of course because your argument is quite fascile. Dylan has a body of work, poetry on which he was judged. There have been other literature awards to poets. You should read the citation. This is not simply based on one song or screenplay but on 50+ years of output. Any person may qualify if their work meets the criteria. I can only recommend that you make yourself fully informed about Dylan's work. Your final point about reviewing awards makes no sense.

The Light Bulb industry is now presenting us with good reasons to buy these new bulbs.

Choice 1: Good Old Fashioned Incandescent Bulbs
Choice 2: Halogen Bulbs, Brighter
Choice 3: CFL, Way better on Lumens Per Watt
Choice 4: LED Bulbs, best on Lumens Per Watt (from what I understand)

So, for scientists with infinite bank accounts, the LED Bulbs win.

The facts are that the LED bulbs, while producing about an order of magnitude improvement over the old fashioned incandescent bulbs, have a price that is anywhere from five to ten times higher, maybe more.

And Then...

We start to think about operating costs.

My electricity company told me to estimate ten cents per KilowattHour and I will have an accuracy of better than ninety percent. The month to month variance (politics and government rules get involved) is generally less than a penny.

AND SO...

How do I go about being smart with money ?

How does one estimate the real cost of a bulb before you make the choice to buy it ?

I'm thinking: Just exactly how do I estimate average operating hours ?

I swapped from incandescent to halogen spots in the kitchen about 12 years ago, then swapped to LED spots about a year later. They weren't cheap - about 5 times the cost - but an order of magnitude less power. And LEDs have an MTBF of AS 20,000 hours. Given that they don't all fail at once, the degradation isn't that noticeable, so some of the originals are still in use now, with one or two LEDs out of 32 or so failed.
And the latest ones give a better brightness as well as better color, plus when they fail (on one or two the PSU part gave the ghost) they don't takes out the fuse box at the same time, which halogens did all the time.

Big, big plus: they are cool to touch instead of giving third degree burns...

Personally, I think the LED beats the CFL out of the gate (or at least the Bombers). Wait. You meant the other CFL. Sorry.

The energy price they use for their estimates is 11c, not 10, but according to the Despot:

LED:
Estimated yearly energy cost: $1.20 (based on 3 hours/day, 11¢/kWh, cost depend on rates and use)
Life: 27.4 years (based on 3 hours/day)

and

CFL:
Estimated yearly energy cost: $1.57 (based on 3 hours/day, 11¢/kWh; cost depends on rates and use)
Life: 11 years (based on 3 hours/day)

So, pretty equivalent, and I think it would come down to your preference for light. Some people just don't like the CFL lighting. With LED you get a much broader choice in 'colour'. Plus, they tend to be dimmable, if you like that kind of thing. I don't find the LEDs that much more expensive than CFLs - maybe twice as much for the newer bulbs?

I have bought some LED's last time. After finding a good offer I replaced the bulbs on the places that are most time active (study, living room...).

I agree with OriginalGriff in message above.

On the other hand, supposing 2 hours of light per day, they are going to pay themselves in less than a year. From then on... they will save me money.

There is one more factor: LED bulbs live far longer than ordinary light bulbs.

So, how about a simple estimate?

Let#s assume there is a lamp with an ordinary 60W bulb which burns about four hours every evening. Let's also assume that an LED bulb provides the same light, but draws only 10W.

So, you would save (60W - 10W) * 4h = 200 Wh every evening. That's 1/5 kWh, so you save 1/5 * 10 cents = 2 cents every day.

Assuming the LED bulb costs 7 bucks, it will take 350 days until it has made up for its cost completely through the saved energy. Let's simply say it takes a year. Shorter if the bulb burns more than four hours per day, longer if it burns less.

LED bulbs have come way down in my area to where it's only about 2 or 3 times the cost of an incandescent bulb.

LED bulbs, even though cost more, have a lower lifetime cost than incandescent bulbs given the fact that LEDs last about 10 times longer and use about 10 times less power.

In the short term, LED is more expensive, but in the long term (> 1yr) they more than pay for themselves. With the lower operating temperature, low power usage, and long life span, they are a good choice. We have about 50 different bulbs in our house, with eight of them being LED. In the two months after we installed them, we saved about 18% on our electric bill.

I've replaced every light in our house with LED. (except specialist bulbs like fridge or oven).

When you buy in bulk they are not too dear and the life far exceeds any othe type. We had CFL in the past but they quickly become dimmer and slower to get to full brightness after a few months.

LED are also very good on electricity.

The main issue is there is a huge different in quality between manufacturers and you need to select the right whiteness type depending on your persnnal preference or the use (kitchen / bathroom vrs lounge).

Just to add to what's already been said, yes the LED's have come down in price, and my home is 100% LED now. But there are definitely different quality manufacturing processes. Some of them are junk and die very early.

We went through the first generation of them and had a couple do the snap-crackle-pop in my home office. There was a recall on those (which of course I didn't qualify for) and reports of some fires. We've also had some problems with automation, dimming, and running on generators. But, overall, it's better than the alternative.

Now my car is all LED, even the headlights. My tactical flashlights are LED. Everything is LED. Our chicken barn is LED lit, controlled by software to simulate different seasons so the girls will lay eggs longer into the winter. Our bedrooms even change color into the evening, the lighting simulates sunset as they dim.

LED is the future.

I hate LED lights in cars, they are blinding to oncoming traffic or in mirrors.

In the home though, a no brainier.

Incandescent are otulawed here so it's a no choice.

Halogen have a slow "charge time" when they emit low light, need a high base power and are big.

CFL are my current choice as they are cheap, bright and have acceptable MTBF.

LED I don't like because they're too white and directional, I had them and to have the same ambient lighting I usually have I'd have to buy a freaking lot of them and recable the house. They also make huge shadows due to directionality and the increased lighting means that either it burns your eyes or you can't see anything.

IMHO, LEDs win hands down, mostly due to the quality of light and low heat output. I replace the bulb in my desklamp last year and the difference was startling. Right after that the 4 bulb CFL in the kitchen failed. I replaced the entire fixture with an LED one and was pleased with the quality of the light, and absence of the buzzing ballast. Since then, all bulbs replaced in my house are LED.

btw, I have an outdoor garage with 4 8 foot (2 bulb) CFLs where 2 of the 4 units will only light one side...and it gets worse in cold weather. I'm waiting for the price to come down on the LED replacements that let you keep your current fixtures, and thankfully allow you to get rid of those noisy ballasts. Smile | :)

Tuesday was Patch Tuesday. And a hefty set of patches.

The RTM versions of Windows Server 2016 and the whole System Center 2016 suite made it out on MSDN yesterday (which I need as I develop/test against those tools).

Today there's a new Insider Build for both PC and mobile. And, I just found out, Ubuntu 16.10.

5 mbps DSL is all I can get. Figure out the rest...

I had a near-miss last night. A skateboarder, in the dark, dressed in dark colors and on his cell-phone, made a turn from a side street right in front of me. I had barely caught a tiny glint of reflection from him or he'd be a road pizza with ball-bearings as a topping.

This was followed two blocks later by a biker, similarly clad and with no reflectors on his bike going the wrong way down a one way street and streaking into the intersection across my bow. Mrs. Wife, who'd normally criticize how I drive (on general principal) kept asking "did you see him" for both instances. The answer: barely in time.

Perhaps this is just part of an opportunity to cull the herd of stupidity that's beginning to overrun the gene pool. Particularly, the nocturnal components. Just sell hunting licenses to drivers.

the problem is... the poor people that run them over are going to get a trauma or have problems with police, just because those bast... were not looking where they walked.
