Just saw some parts form the Band of Brothers TV series... One thing got me is a drinking party organized on a base...
Is is still allowed to US solders to drink while on base?

Alcoholic beverages are considered contraband, and always have been. In war time, though, officers tend to look the other way unless things get out of hand. It is also (and always has been) a court martial offense to be drunk on duty. In extreme circumstances, it can be considered treason.

Huh. 
I was in the Infantry for 4.5 years and we were allowed to have alcohol in the barracks, if over 21 - never contraband. The onpost PX sells Everclear for phucks sake. We were not allowed to be drunk on duty, but it was never, ever enforced with court martial. I used to get drunk with our LT all the time.

I do know that US Navy ships are dry (no booze!) while Her Majesty are wet (well we did own most of the World once), which is why US Marines prefer UK Navy ships...

It is disgusting to notice the increase in the quantity of coffee used by my subjects, and the amount of money that goes out of the country as a consequence. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about it much anymore, but when sons were deployed, no <permitted> drinking in a combat zone (basically anything having sand...).
Of course, soldiers will be soldiers. Drinking on duty tends to get people killed, so it's frowned on.

Jeez, maybe they should have made it an ad for not eating a cholesterol laden 1/2 lb burger with fries. That's got to be 2000 Calories sitting on that table. I guess vegan's probably aren't much of drinkers either.

Why not? With the exception of mead, aren't alcoholic drinks made out of plants?

Well ... yeast isn't a plant, it's a fungus - which is the same domain (Eukaryota), but a different Kingdom (Fungi rather than Plantae) - and that's what makes beer into beer, and wine into wine. Without it, beer is a thin soup, and wine is just grape juice.
And Beer can be "fined" (the suspended yeast removed) with Isinglass, which is a substance obtained from the dried swim bladders of fish. (Most British beers are fined with Isinglass).
