It's a contract with a monthly fixed pay. And it's the level of a low level specialized labourer, with no additional contractations. I asked for a raise and now I'm waiting, my curruculums are burning in my pockets though - and the loss would be for the company, as their field is extremely specialized and requires years of training on field just to be self sufficient. And their technology is so old that no new developer is ready - C++98 and VB6. And the pay is so low that experienced programmers usually laugh in the face of HR.
They would lose 5 years of experience + the 2-3 years necessary to train another recruit + the 6-12 month necessary to find a recruit that accepts the company's conditions. I asked nicely, but if the response doesn't suit me...

Okay that is really deliberate from the company. I mean i have a real gem since i work at a company where we have a labour agreement but according to what you say my monthly based pay down to the hours still makes more than triple of yours which i find is quite insane 
So im pressing thumbs they'll agree to the rise

It's no wonder a lot of Italian professionals escape from Italy - and meet a lot of resistance because we agree to lower pays that for us are unthinkably high!
I wouldn't be so sure as to they'll agree: management is stupid and blind. The only reason this sector of the company is still alive is that us real workers keep it afloat despite the management, working against and around it due to sense of duty and pride and people without attributes. But we're gradually losing valuable members that has been with us for years and nobody bats an eye or tries to negotiate / improve. We're expendable in the eyes of the management, after all we're "the labourers of software", intended as low level labourers. As if writing software is the same of cleaning floors.
The positive note of the company, the one that keeps me here, is that they're honest. Cheap as fark but honest - a rare gem in the Italian industry.

I'd love to see MS stop using names of already existing technologies (their reason being to immediately gain web hits, and prevent others from gaining them, (e.g. Windows, SQL server, etc. (and a myriad of others,))) so that when I search for something, I can actually find it.

Just so tried of the corporate crap would give my eye teeth for a gig that would allow me to decompress from this pressure cooker and work out of the house. Finding a Collings D3 acoustic guitar under the tree would be the perfect complement to go along with such a gig for those moments when I need to push back and 'unthink' before hitting it again.
Yes semi retirement sounds real nice about now!

Now that I've been retired for a number of years, nothing else applies. I suppose I could have chosen a faster, bigger, better, badder development machine except I only bought one a couple of months ago. I suppose the other thing I would choose is a Mercedes 350 SLK, which my wife wants.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Santa ain't gonna get you that for this Christmas. Or for the next Christmas. Or, like, ever.
The only thing I've seen remain consistent through my career is that the clients/managers/customers being unsure about what exactly is it that they want. May be not managers (to some extent, and with some exceptions). But clients. Always.
And no, it doesn't matter what methodology you use. So please don't turn this into a discussion about how agile/scrum/blah-ti-boodoo will ensure that there are clear AND sane requirements.

I see you are on the naughty list this year. 
I see more as an if you are going to wish for something that will never happen, wish for the ultimate. Along the lines of; don't just wish for a pay raise, wish for full on all expenses paid retirement at age 30. I think we would all love to see clear and sane requirements, we know it can't happen, but it sure would be nice. When managers and business types push all these miracle methods that are somehow how going to change a process for the better and faster, it just frustrates those who are in the middle of a project to suddenly have to change gears and conform to the "better new and improved" methods. I feel your pain, it's a worthy item on a wish list, like world peace, ending hunger and poverty.
It was broke, so I fixed it.
