Sure, but google is a bunch of web services that makes no bones about the fact that they rely on advertising to provide the services.
Windows is an operating system, which is supposed to do no more than provide access to the hardware and software that users need to use to work/play/entertain themselves -- no-one "uses" an operating system directly; it's just a platform on which they can load the things that they actually use.
An operating system has no place reaping personal data from its users.

As for the rest, you're right - But one can turn it off. Save your energy to go berserk once they decide you shall not be able to turn it off.

If you only use android, without all the google add-ons, you're safe-ish -- but an OS to make a phone useful is a completely different kettle of fish from an OS on a business machine or home PC.
Phones aren't about privacy; work is.

Install a firewall and start whitelisting services you need to use. Honestly, this is the only way to be safe. For starters, you could also just change the OS settings, which is reasonably well enough and consumes less time.

They show a dialog on installation, and one after the Creator's update.
That doesn't sound much like a hoop to me? After all, it's something used by billions of people, how can one expect to have the default settings matching their gusto?
Oh yeah, if MS knew that beforehand they could server you with the settings you want, but they'd need to access your data

The Creator Update has only just been released, so billions aren't using it just yet..
Take a look at the updated dialog during install^. You can see everything is switched "off" but the text still says they'll collect my data and push adverts to me.

That depends on what 'basic' means, if they're just sending crash logs I (personally) wouldn't care.

Yes, I agree. My main point is that on other OS's I can opt out if I want (I usually don't for crash reports) - Microsoft no longer allows that with this update.

I do not use Office and have notifications 10 times a day about it... and got tired to find how to turn it off...

I had a note about office upgrade show up last week. Clicked "don't remind me" or something and it hasn't shown up again. Is that the "ads" people are upset with?

I don't have the tabletted style, so I'm fine without it.

My personal approach to this was throwing the tiles out from the start menu altogether.
Either I want a file and use [Windows] + [E] and browse to it.
Or I want to start a program and hit [Windows] and start typing, e.g. 'Visual' and then hit [Enter].
No need for a start menu, apart from the search. For me at least.

The search box is where I've seen "suggested apps". Previous versions of Windows 10 allowed me to hide them, but I think that option has gone in this latest version.

It's not a deal-breaker for me just yet.. depends how much they use it once they've got more convertees on board
