Digital "miners" run specially configured computers to solve the problems and generate currency, whose value ultimate fluctuates according to market demand. Math pays. Who'da thunk? (Seems kind of esoteric to me...)

It's actually a straight forward but brute force computation called a Hashcash but usually you allocate all the computer resources to find a solution rather than implementing it as some low level background process, since, for bitcoin at least, I believe it requires some specialized hardware / GPU's. I'm surprised embedding a background miner worked at all.

My snark wasn't clear enough - sorry. The fact that solving a math problem leads to money in that way seems esoteric, and stupid, to me. But if people want to pay...

I looked into this a while back and found that the amount you pay in energy costs are more than what you would actually receive in bitcoin.
There is no such thing as "something for nothing".
When you are dead, you won't even know that you are dead. It's a pain only felt by others.
Same thing when you are stupid.

If you're paying for hardware and power then yes you either need the latest and greatest ASIC miner or to be mining some me-too coin that doesn't have a dedicated ASIC yet. But if you're stealing resources it doesn't matter how inefficient they are since the cost to you is zero.

The only google products I use are android, maps, and translate, but "to google" is a new verb, and has nothing to do with the noun.
The guy was a w@nker, though. What's unfortunate is that treating this w@nker justly will come up as precedent in other cases, where the respondents aren't w@nkers.
