We all get that if we aren't paying for a product, the product is us, and we're being sold to advertisers. It's how all 'free' entertainment, publishing, and broadcasting works.
I almost bought a refurbished Dell desktop, but then they told me that 'people also bought' an ink cartridge and a breadmaker. So I didn't.
I went to a real store and bought lumber, concrete mix, a shovel, and grass seed instead - which could be irrelevant, or frightening.

The problem of "Malvertising" is also on the rise too, Legit sites serving up malware thru Ads.
Also some sites have so may flashy, blinky, Video, PopUp, PopUnder, Hidden Iframe. Etc that you can not even view the "Content" you went there for to start with.
And they wonder "Why" people use Ad Blockers.

Not to point out the obvious, but you realise that someone, somewhere, is paying for the music, the hosting, the infrastructure to serve the music and the bandwidth to get it to your ISP (and obviously you pay for the bandwidth to get it from your ISP to your device).
If you don't contribute something then you're asking someone else to pay for you.
4 minute ads, though, are dumb. Ads that are simply annoying and pointless are dumb. Ads that are off topic and of not of interest to you are pointless (but not necessarily dumb). Ads that provide you with information that's actually useful are a good thing.
So there's a balance here and unfortunately marketing people often tend to want to go for the cheapest, loudest shot they can to hit their performance goals ("clicks") instead of taking the time to actually be informative and useful and hit their company's real goal (sales to happy customers). Making this harder is people don't want to be targeted (even if it's totally anonymous targeting) yet they get militant about ads that are off-topic.
This is a really, really important conversation that everyone would rather not have. It's actually fundamental to the future of the web. Someone, somewhere, pays. That "someone" will, always, eventually, end up being the consumer. It's just a matter of "how".

Yeah, I realize someone has to pay for everything.
However, no matter how much advertisements you're going to throw at me I'm not going to click that link or buy that product.
So what's the point of those ads, except keeping me from what I really want (in case of YouTube, the video)?
Right now I get a lot of Heineken commercials. Yes, I know Heineken. If I order a beer it's probably a Heineken and it sure as hell isn't for me because I DON'T DRINK BEER AT ALL!
Do advertisers pay per view or click?
If it's per view I get it, if it's per click they haven't made a single penny from me...

I was once watching a documentary on youtube with autoplay turned on. It went to the next video that was very interesting. played for about 25 minutes before I noticed the little 'skip ad' button in the corner. Turned out to be a 45 minute ad that was far more interesting then the video it was hosted in.

I've always just used Raspbian, but there is very little unique to that OS that means much to me. Oh, that really cool Scratch programming toy, really good, but I stopped rolling like that a while ago.
Ubuntu is always my goto for VMs on my PC, and I see now there is Ubuntu Core for IoT enrolling your Pi, and the more common, and older, Ubuntu MATE. This looks a lot less IoT and more Ubuntu.
What's your choice/collection of Pi OSs?

Started with Rapsbian, but DietPi at the moment. Still want to try RISC OS, just to see if it works 
I've heard that Win10 might also work on the Pi, but I'm not going to try that.

Raspbian for me. I have about a dozen devices, consisting of about half of the all models ever available.
I'm retired. There's a nap for that...

Me too. I wanted Ubuntu MATE, but more importantly I want to be using and learning by Pi. After one or two failed attempts to get that to boot off the SD, I went write back to NOOBS, and chose to install Raspbian. Within 20 minutes of giving up on Ubuntu, I had a running Pi.

I've started getting popups (winten) regarding some kind of preparation for the coming Creator's Update. I've finally looked at a summary of what's new with it. Mostly stuff I probably won't use...I see they're still pushing Cortana.
The Timeline feature looks interesting. Anyone here brave enough to try it out? Cornelius?

I have it installed on two machines. The UX hasn'the changed much, if at all. The only bug that I've noticed is that CD/play list titles in the Media Player appear corrupted. I can't remember if this was true of the previous build.
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.

Yes, I did try the pre-release version of the next Creator's Update a week or so ago. It seemed to work fine, until I tried to get into my bank account using the new Edge. I keep my passwords long and very complex and store them in an encrypted Excel spreadsheet. Then I copy and paste them into the password box on the bank's website. They are too long and involved to type them in character-by-character.
The problem with the new pre-release Edge: It does not allow you to paste passwords using [CTRL]-V. It does not work. You have to right-click the password box and select "Paste" using your mouse.
My problem: The Bank of America website does not give you the option to copy and paste using your mouse. You have to use [CTRL]-V! Aaaaargh!
So the new pre-release effectively shut me out of my Bank of America accounts.
So I reported the issue to Microsoft and went back to the previous version of Windows 10 that worked. I may try it again with a future release. I don't want to have to switch to Chrome. 
I used the pre-release so briefly that I don't really have anything else to report.
By the way: A few threads up Eddy Vluggen mentions using the MVPS Hosts file to block commercials. I have used it over a year and it works great.

I assume they still have that awesome feature that resets your preferences back to Edge every time you glance away from your screen?
Seriously Microsoft: stop it. I don't want Edge. You had 15 years of my time with IE and you squandered it. We're done. It's not me, it's you.

 I still use IE instead of Edge but what bugs me is that even though I have a home page set to Google, starting a new tab wants me to use Bing instead...and I noticed it has started giving me a bunch of celebrity breaking news as well...quickly fixed by a click on the homepage icon. One of these days I will get around to fixing that.

In IE if you click the down arrow on the right side of the address bar, there are icons for the other installed search engines and an "Add" button to add new search engines.
