I have to admit, the "Salary isn't Everything" section is very helpful. For me, I prefer holidays and job security, over wages. And I learned a long time ago, I prefer working for a larger company than being a contractor or working for a small firm. When the author broke down the 'real' hourly wage it definitely showed a big difference. Applicants should definitely consider benefits and culture to money when accepting a position.

For all my grumbling (which you may have come across, or not) after my 6 month contract gig was up, the company wanted to extend the contract for another 6 months. In order to keep my sanity, I walked into my manager's office, knowing:
a) I was in a good financial position to simply walk out the door and never come back
b) I was in a good "we need Marc" position to negotiate
c) I have a good relationship with my manager
and basically said "I'd like to work only 3 days a week, and I'll come in on other days if there are deadlines or work that others are depending on for their schedules" and she agreed. She even counter-offered with, "we really want you to continue here, so if you want to do 2 days a week, that would be fine, whatever makes you happy."
Sweet. So for all my griping, I do work for and with some really cool people.

After my 5 week contract, they waited 6 months and called me back for a 1 year contract, and after another year they called me back for a 2 year contract - direct so they did not have to wait the statuary 12 months to dodge the agency, that was 13 years ago.

That happened to me once -- the company (A) I was working as lead developer for a contract they had with another company (B), well (A) one day announced that they couldn't guarantee our paychecks (they had several other contracts with other companies on other projects that were sinking the boat) so I left. (B) waited out the contract period with (A) and then gave me the contract directly. Things were wonderful until (B) had to file for bankruptcy and they let go of all their contractors!

Same here. I'm undecided on the big vs small issue having spent 11.5y at one medium sized company (1300 to 450 people) and less than a year so far at a smaller one (<50); and at that both're contractors as opposed to companies making and selling a single product. Both have their pluses and minuses; OTOH the big one was bureaucratic enough that I suspect that saying something like "coming from 25 days of leave/year only getting 14 is a major step backward" at the bigger one would've gotten something on the line of "our process won't let us give you more" instead of the owner striking out 14 and replacing it with a larger number on the written offer.

There’s no other way to put this, QNAP do not believe that a bug which risks corrupting your data on your QNAP NAS is worthwhile mentioning in their release notes at all.
...
We use StorageCraft ShadowProtect a lot for our client backups. It’s been proven to be a solid backup and recovery solution for us for many years. We typically store these backups onsite on QNAP devices with 4 drives in a RAID 5 configuration. Now in “normal” operation this works well. It’s only if a drive in the RAID array fails however did the QNAP device then have to resort to recalculate the missing data, and when it does that it makes errors in the calculations but does not tell you about it. These errors cause the data to be corrupted. Sure – you replace the failed drive, and it then used the same calculations to repopulate the failed drive, with corrupted data. Basically if you have a QNAP with a RAID 5 array AND you have a drive fail, you WILL HAVE an issue with data corruption

It is surprising that the publisher is just now getting to the 'digital edition' as it were... I remember writing applications for D&D in the early '80s on a Commodore PET.

Eh, doesn't surprise me. They stopped listening to people after 3.5 I feel. 4th edition was garbage and I haven't looked much into 5th edition yet. I just play PathfinderRPG (a revamp of 3.5) with some rules modded back to 3.5. Also the Giant In the Playground[^] forum has already come up with excellent online rules they've been using for years. The official digital edition is a bit behind the times.

My son, who is a great DM, really likes 5th edition. I'm also surprised they are getting on the bandwagon so late, especially since there's numerous sites like roll20 out there.

I'll have to check out 5th edition. I heard they moved away from 4th's board-game-esque combat system which was one of the things I disliked about 4th. I still like 3.5's level of customization which I don't think they brought back but house-ruling a combination of 3.5 and 5 could be a fun adventure.
