As we monitor the activities of our customers, we could see there's so much of non-peak hours where there's 0 activity happening on the floor. After observing this pattern for a while , I felt like "There you go! Let's wear that business consultant hat and call up the manager of a company & explain about how we could do effective resource optimizations, and bring down idle time of employees".(just to boast how our intelligent software is ,helping to spot weak links in their company's operations )
Me: Hello Sir, great day to you. Like I've given a hint over email about Resource optimizations, we could explore further on how we could tweak the resource utilizations.
Manager: Sure
*Me:* I see a lot of idle time in our activity monitor of your team. During this time your employees simply sit and do nothing?
*Manager:* No we'll all be chatting together.
*Me (in mind):* Well, okay let me go back and tweak my software.
I felt it so funny that he is completely okay to leave his employees gossip around and do nothing during off peak hours.

I agree - I have done the burn out dance and it's much healthier to have a balance than being 100% all the time.
which also reminds me of a boss who made a big song and dance, as he was wont to do, of knowing how frequently reports were run and who ran them.
So I created a report to show this.
He hadn't figured out that the very report itself would keep track of how many times it had been run and by whom - so a few months later I took a peek and guess who had looked at the report a total of once - yes the boss...

For example, A Customer support team that's having 0 calls. On the other hand there's pile of email queries waiting to be cleared.
We see what's pending, we see employees are logged in, but just because there's no "calls" waiting they just sit idle. They could very well be used to take up pending email cases.
It's a serious resource engagement issue.

So, the 1/2 or so I spend with my manager in the morning reviewing the activities from the previous day, action plans from the meetings, reviewing how to address requests from internal customers (that would be addressing an internal 'sale' if you will).. because there is no apparent monitored activity is 'idle time'? Hmmm.. no.. that is productive time.
