While I was migrating her machine, I remembered that we use Turbo Tax for our annual tax stuff. Since Intuit (I used to work for these guys) isn't as forward thinking as I am, there is not Linux version of their tax app. SWMBO kinda panicked, and I told her, "Relax. We can do it on their web site, or if you don't want feel comfortable doing our taxes on the web, I could install TT on my Windows VM, and you can remote desktop into it and use the desktop software there.

She seemed to calm down a bit, and we have a month or so before we have to worry about it anyway.

Out of curiosity, I searched for it and the correct definition was the very first link (urbandictionary.com). BTW, I use DuckDuckGo for my search engine.

Out of curiosity, I googled t, and it came up as the very first link there, too (inernetslang.com).

Yahoo and Bing also returned the urbandictionary link, and in both cases, it was the first search result.

So the Missus went out with a friend for the evening, the Daughter moved out a week and a half ago and the Son is out on the piss with mates, so I was home alone with alcohol.

Decided I would have a bit of a look around the home IT Infrastructure and get something done tonight. NAS's it was.

Started with the ReadyNAS, connect, login and upgrade from 6.9.3 to 6.9.4 272+ days uptime. Next was the FreeNAS running 16GB of RAM and 8 x 3TB Seagate Barracuda HDD and 283+ days uptime. Alerts show I have 2 HDD with uncorrectable sectors and only one new 3TB Seagate Barracuda HDD's sitting on the shelf. Remove the one with 64 sectors showing as bad and install the new one. Pull out about 3KG of dust and decide I will have to take it out and attack it with the air compressor tomorrow (raining tonight).

Resilvering is at 1.8% of 17.2TB after 26 minutes, might be done this afternoon (New Year over 50 minutes old now).

While this is going on and I'm looking through my email I notice a domain expiring in 21 days. Off to Go Daddy and renew it only to find the sunshines have stored my credit cards, the current and the cancelled cards. No domains Auto Renew either. Wasn't thinking clearly enough to remove the current and only leave the cancelled card, so Wednesday it's down to the Post Office to buy a Prepaid Credit Card, can't put less than $20.00 on it, so will buy something for $15.00 and put my new Cesit Card with $5.00 credit on it on my Go Daddy account.

Then I'll call Go Daddy and tell them to faarrrkkkk right off. Had some good feedback/results from a couple of companies in the past week where I have sent an email and thrown a few elephants and sunshines in them. Possibly wouldn't work in the good ole nancy boy US where they'd get there panties in a knot and have a good cry.

NB. Might get the Synology DS-916+ with 4 x 8TB Seagate IronWolfs up and running tomorrow, see what state I wake up in and what time.

I recently moved my 10 year old QNap TS509Pro from UK to Cyprus, wrapped it up well, and carried it in my suitcase. Dead on arrival wont power on....took it to bits, poked about, power supply starts ok with jumper on ATX, but no amount of wiggling on any other jumpers or plugs etc made any difference. Fortunately had no critical data on it, and I had also lost the key for the 5 drive bays. Needless to say it has been ripped apart now and the HDDs have been re-purposed.

Happy hangover for when you wake up Big Grin | :-D

Hi all,

Probably I'll start this next year playing with a Raspberry Pi.

I'm worried about the SDCard corruption given an unexpected shutdown due to a power loss.

I would like to know if I should worry about it and if there is any UPS system that any of you have tried with a Raspberry Pi that could shut it down gracefully if a power loss happens.

Build one yourself. The Pi could run for days on one of my RC model batteries. In the old days of self built 8 bit computers it was not rare to keep the computer and the static memory in standby. Usually this took not much more than the battery and a few transistors and diodes. The battery was charged during normal operation and started supplying the RAMs as soon as the power failed. You could build something similar for the Pi, but for the main supply, not just for the RAMs. That actually makes it simpler. Just don't use a Lithium something battery. They don't like to be charged in such a crude manner and react really badly to overcharging.

Mobile power | JB Hi-Fi[^], just keep it plugged in to power and side step the mains power adapters for the Pi.

A Pi's power draw is so minimal that a small UPS could power it for days/weeks.

BTW, if you're concerned with SD card corruption, boot from a USB thumb drive. It's much faster booting and corruption is not an issue (or at least not nearly as big of one).

Here's a helpful booting hint. If you switch to booting from a USB thumb drive, and after you move your OS to the thumb drive, reformat the SD card (fat 32) and insert it into the SD card reader. It takes much less time for the OS to boot if there's an empty SD card inserted than if it wasn't.

It's 32gb, fast (USB 3.0), and when they update the Pi to have USB 3, it'll boot even faster. Fast is good.

hum... why the corruption possibility is reduced? Isn't the problem the same? I mean, if anything is reading/writing and the power is removed... problems should happen... or am I missing anything here?

I'm not worried on keeping the Pi working for days, I just want it to ensure it will shut down properly if there's a power outage, and given the Pi will be placed far away from people, I wanted to remove the power to shut it down...

Well, why would you want to shut it down at all? If it's "far away from people", someone would have to go turn it back on. Put a big enough UPS behind it, and it will run for months. I think a small UPS (no bigger than 650VA, should be more than large enough for even extended power outages.

SD cards are prone to corruption (file corruption notwithstanding). That's why booting from a USB thumb drive is preferable. Putting the Pi on a UPS will mean never having to worry about either. I was simply recommending what I do on my Pi's. (I personally have been burned before by the "corrupted SD card" thing - never again.)

Amazon has a crapload of UPS's for less than $50 that will fill the bill for you.

If you insist on having the Pi shutdown at loss of power, you can still do that via the UPS. I know that there's an app for Linux and APC UPSs, but then again, there's the hassle of sending someone to turn the Pi back on.

I think I'll go this way, the APC UPS daemon and put a switch there...

That way I'm fully covered:

- If they leave for holidays and want to shut all the devices down, they can just switch power OFF.
- If there is a power outage the UPS will do the work.
- If for any reason any of the softwares there hangs, then they'll be able to reset it easily.

Even I would prefer something like PiJuice Hat, it seems they are having stock problems... And I have not found any replacement that looks good enough...

You can also remote in with the terminal, and reset or shutdown. There are ramifications when you connect anything to the Pi pin header (the PiJuice thing). Tread carefully.

You can also get a local Pi to test the apc connnectivity stuff before deploying it to the remote location. If power outages are brief, a small UPS should do the job nicely. You should also be able to have the Pi email you when the UPS kicks on/off, or setup a web app on the pi that you can connect to to keep an eye on things.

Automation is cool once it's setup correctly.

Working in this field and having been bitten many times over the years, our general rule of thumb is to write as little as possible to the boot device. I have no idea why booting from an SD card or a USB drive would make any difference - the corruption is a file system issue. It typically occurs when you are writing to the file system structures

A boot operation is typically read only. I have products in factories that have to run for years, so we have come up with approaches to minimize writes to anything important. For example, diagnostics are collected using a USB drive. Working storage is ram, the results are copied to the USB, the boot device is not touched. Logging is another issue. What we've found is that if writing only occurs on a user commanded basis, typically you don't lose power during that operation Smile | :)

I have 3 Pi's that I am playing with. There is nothing graceful about shutting one down. You just kill the power. I bought a cheap battery UPS and run it with one of them and it works, ie: the Pi continues to run when you kill the power but I still have to kill the UPS power when I want to shut down. I haven't experienced any corruption from the shut down procedure but I do have one experimental OS that doesn't boot anymore (which may be from corruption but seems like more of a video problem).

Terminal in and issue the "shutdown -r" command. Voila! Graceful shutdown.
