I had one of these log into this site with your webcam and go through our virtual interviews with one of the companies that actually build these systems.
It felt so... disconnected. I could not "read" the interviewer and I really didn't think much for this system. I requested a retraction of my interview and resume.
Fast forward a year or so. Went to a developers symposium and went to see a seminar on micro-services and how one local company implemented this architecture into their system. Low and behold it was my favorite video interview company, and they went through the painstaking process of how they were attempting to break up their blob of a system into something a little more streamlined. The way they were pitching the presentation had undertones of recruitment begging for someone to "help us".
What they had for a system gave me flashbacks of "DLL Hell", and the fresh programmers of today who just throw another framework into the mix. No wonder the thing is such a pig when you have half the NuGet packages known to man being fixed with half of the GIT repositories.
Yep, they have quite a job in front of them. Glad I did not join their team

Long, long ago, Microsoft quietly announced that it was going to remove the venerable mspaint.exe from Windows 10. The app was listed as deprecated, indicating intent to remove it in a future Windows 10 update, and the app itself was even updated to warn users that it was going to be removed from Windows in a future release. Crap artists? My Mom has my work on her phone's wallpaper.

Software mitigations are an unsustainable path
Fortunately or unfortunately, our offensive research advanced much faster than our defensive research, and we quickly discovered that software mitigation of all possible leaks due to Spectre was infeasible. This was due to a variety of reasons. First, the engineering effort diverted to combating Spectre was disproportionate to its threat level. In V8 we face many other security threats that are much worse, from direct out-of-bound reads due to regular bugs (faster and more direct than Spectre), out-of-bound writes (impossible with Spectre, and worse) and potential remote code execution (impossible with Spectre and much, much worse). Second, the increasingly complicated mitigations that we designed and implemented carried significant complexity, which is technical debt and might actually increase the attack surface, and performance overheads. Third, testing and maintaining mitigations for microarchitectural leaks is even trickier than designing gadgets themselves, since it’s hard to be sure the mitigations continue working as designed. At least once, important mitigations were effectively undone by later compiler optimizations. Fourth, we found that effective mitigation of some variants of Spectre, particularly variant 4, to be simply infeasible in software, even after a heroic effort by our partners at Apple to combat the problem in their JIT compiler.
Fortunately, one of their existing features that has long been sponsored by DRAM manufacturers - isolation via a zillion processes - does appear to work.
